Deliver me, God, because the waters are up to my neck. | 1Save me, God, for the water has risen to my neck. |
I am sinking in deep mire, and there is no solid ground. I have come into deep water, and the flood overwhelms me. | 2I have sunk in deep mud, and there is no footing; I have come into deep water, and a flood sweeps over me. |
I am exhausted from calling for help. My throat is parched. My eyes are strained from looking for God. | 3I am weary from my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God. |
Those who hate me without cause are more than the hairs of my head. My persecutors are mighty, and they want to destroy me. Must I be forced to return what I did not steal? | 4Those who hate me without cause are more numerous than the hairs of my head; my deceitful enemies, who would destroy me, are powerful. Though I did not steal, I must repay. |
God, you know my sins, and my guilt is not hidden from you. | 5God, you know my foolishness, and my guilty acts are not hidden from you. |
Do not let those who look up to you be ashamed because of me, Lord God of the Heavenly Armies. Let not those who seek you be humiliated because of me, God of Israel. | 6Do not let those who put their hope in you be disgraced because of me, Lord GOD of Armies; do not let those who seek you be humiliated because of me, God of Israel. |
I am being mocked because of you. Dishonor overwhelms me. | 7For I have endured insults because of you, and shame has covered my face. |
I am a stranger to my brothers, a foreigner to my mother's sons. | 8I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother's sons |
Zeal for your house consumes me, and the mockeries of those who insult you fall on me. | 9because zeal for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me. |
I weep and fast, and I am mocked for it. | 10I mourned and fasted, but it brought me insults. |
When I dressed in sackcloth, I became an object of gossip among them. | 11I wore sackcloth as my clothing, and I was a joke to them. |
The prominent people mock me, composing drinking songs. | 12Those who sit at the city gate talk about me, and drunkards make up songs about me. |
As for me, LORD, may my prayer to you come at a favorable time. God, in the abundance of your gracious love, answer me with your sure deliverance. | 13But as for me, LORD, my prayer to you is for a time of favor. In your abundant, faithful love, God, answer me with your sure salvation. |
Rescue me from the mud and do not let me sink. Rescue me from those who hate me, and from the deep waters. | 14Rescue me from the miry mud; don't let me sink. Let me be rescued from those who hate me and from the deep water. |
Let neither the floodwaters overwhelm me nor let the deep swallow me up, nor the mouth of the well close over me. | 15Don't let the floodwaters sweep over me or the deep swallow me up; don't let the Pit close its mouth over me. |
Answer me, LORD, for your gracious love is good; Turn to me in keeping with your great compassion, | 16Answer me, LORD, for your faithful love is good. In keeping with your abundant compassion, turn to me. |
and do not ignore your servant, because I am in distress. Hurry to answer me! | 17Don't hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress. Answer me quickly! |
Draw near and redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies. | 18Come near to me and redeem me; ransom me because of my enemies. |
Truly you know my reproach, shame, and disgrace. All my enemies are known to you. | 19You know the insults I endure--my shame and disgrace. You are aware of all my adversaries. |
Insults broke my heart. I despaired and looked for sympathy; but there was none, for comforters, but I found none. | 20Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I waited for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, but found no one. |
They put poison in my food, in my thirst they forced me to drink vinegar. | 21Instead, they gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. |
May their dining tables entrap them, and become a snare for their allies. | 22Let their table set before them be a snare, and let it be a trap for their allies. |
May their eyes be blinded and may their bodies tremble continuously. | 23Let their eyes grow too dim to see, and let their hips continually quake. |
May you pour out your fury on them. May your burning anger overtake them. | 24Pour out your rage on them, and let your burning anger overtake them. |
May their camp become desolate and their tents remain unoccupied. | 25Make their fortification desolate; may no one live in their tents. |
For they persecute those whom you have struck, and they brag about the pain of those you have wounded. | 26For they persecute the one you struck and talk about the pain of those you wounded. |
May you punish them for their crimes; may they receive no verdict of innocence from you. | 27Charge them with crime on top of crime; do not let them share in your righteousness. |
May they be erased from the Book of Life, and their names not be written with the righteous. | 28Let them be erased from the book of life and not be recorded with the righteous. |
As for me, I am afflicted and hurting; may your deliverance, God, establish me on high. | 29But as for me--poor and in pain--let your salvation protect me, God. |
Let me praise the name of God with a song that I may magnify him with thanksgiving. | 30I will praise God's name with song and exalt him with thanksgiving. |
That will please the LORD more than oxen and bulls with horns and hooves. | 31That will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with horns and hooves. |
The afflicted will watch and rejoice. May you who seek God take courage. | 32The humble will see it and rejoice. You who seek God, take heart! |
For the LORD listens to the needy and doesn't despise those in bondage. | 33For the LORD listens to the needy and does not despise his own who are prisoners. |
Let the heavens and earth praise him, along with the sea and its swarming creatures. | 34Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and everything that moves in them, |
For God will deliver Zion and will rebuild the cities of Judah so they may live there and possess them. | 35for God will save Zion and build up the cities of Judah. They will live there and possess it. |
The descendants of his servants will inherit it, and those who cherish his name will live there. | 36The descendants of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will live in it. |
