As He was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth. | 1Now as Jesus was passing by, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. |
His disciples questioned Him: "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" | 2His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who committed the sin that caused him to be born blind, this man or his parents?" |
"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," Jesus answered. "This came about so that God's works might be displayed in him. | 3Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but he was born blind so that the acts of God may be revealed through what happens to him. |
We must do the works of Him who sent Me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work. | 4We must perform the deeds of the one who sent me as long as it is daytime. Night is coming when no one can work. |
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." | 5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." |
After He said these things He spit on the ground, made some mud from the saliva, and spread the mud on his eyes. | 6Having said this, he spat on the ground and made some mud with the saliva. He smeared the mud on the blind man's eyes |
"Go," He told him, "wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means "Sent"). So he left, washed, and came back seeing. | 7and said to him, "Go wash in the pool of Siloam" (which is translated "sent"). So the blind man went away and washed, and came back seeing. |
His neighbors and those who formerly had seen him as a beggar said, "Isn't this the man who sat begging?" | 8Then the neighbors and the people who had seen him previously as a beggar began saying, "Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?" |
Some said, "He's the one." "No," others were saying, "but he looks like him." He kept saying, "I'm the one!" | 9Some people said, "This is the man!" while others said, "No, but he looks like him." The man himself kept insisting, "I am the one!" |
Therefore they asked him, "Then how were your eyes opened?" | 10So they asked him, "How then were you made to see?" |
He answered, "The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, Go to Siloam and wash.' So when I went and washed I received my sight."" | 11He replied, "The man called Jesus made mud, smeared it on my eyes and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and was able to see." |
Where is He?" they asked." I don't know," he said. | 12They said to him, "Where is that man?" He replied, "I don't know." |
They brought the man who used to be blind to the Pharisees. | 13They brought the man who used to be blind to the Pharisees. |
The day that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath. | 14(Now the day on which Jesus made the mud and caused him to see was a Sabbath.) |
So again the Pharisees asked him how he received his sight." He put mud on my eyes," he told them. "I washed and I can see." | 15So the Pharisees asked him again how he had gained his sight. He replied, "He put mud on my eyes and I washed, and now I am able to see." |
Therefore some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for He doesn't keep the Sabbath!" But others were saying, "How can a sinful man perform such signs?" And there was a division among them. | 16Then some of the Pharisees began to say, "This man is not from God, because he does not observe the Sabbath." But others said, "How can a man who is a sinner perform such miraculous signs?" Thus there was a division among them. |
Again they asked the blind man, "What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?"" He's a prophet," he said. | 17So again they asked the man who used to be blind, "What do you say about him, since he caused you to see?" "He is a prophet," the man replied. |
The Jews did not believe this about him--that he was blind and received sight--until they summoned the parents of the one who had received his sight. | 18Now the Jewish religious leaders refused to believe that he had really been blind and had gained his sight until at last they summoned the parents of the man who had become able to see. |
They asked them, "Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? How then does he now see?"" | 19They asked the parents, "Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?" |
We know this is our son and that he was born blind," his parents answered. " | 20So his parents replied, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. |
But we don't know how he now sees, and we don't know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he's of age. He will speak for himself." | 21But we do not know how he is now able to see, nor do we know who caused him to see. Ask him, he is a mature adult. He will speak for himself." |
His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, since the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him as Messiah, he would be banned from the synagogue. | 22(His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jewish religious leaders. For the Jewish leaders had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. |
This is why his parents said, "He's of age; ask him." | 23For this reason his parents said, "He is a mature adult, ask him.") |
So a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and told him, "Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner!" | 24Then they summoned the man who used to be blind a second time and said to him, "Promise before God to tell the truth. We know that this man is a sinner." |
He answered, "Whether or not He's a sinner, I don't know. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I can see!" | 25He replied, "I do not know whether he is a sinner. I do know one thing--that although I was blind, now I can see." |
Then they asked him, "What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?"" | 26Then they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he cause you to see?" |
I already told you," he said, "and you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don't want to become His disciples too, do you?" | 27He answered, "I told you already and you didn't listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You people don't want to become his disciples too, do you?" |
They ridiculed him: "You're that man's disciple, but we're Moses' disciples. | 28They heaped insults on him, saying, "You are his disciple! We are disciples of Moses! |
We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man--we don't know where He's from!"" | 29We know that God has spoken to Moses! We do not know where this man comes from!" |
This is an amazing thing," the man told them. "You don't know where He is from, yet He opened my eyes! | 30The man replied, "This is a remarkable thing, that you don't know where he comes from, and yet he caused me to see! |
We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He listens to him. | 31We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is devout and does his will, God listens to him. |
Throughout history no one has ever heard of someone opening the eyes of a person born blind. | 32Never before has anyone heard of someone causing a man born blind to see. |
If this man were not from God, He wouldn't be able to do anything."" | 33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." |
You were born entirely in sin," they replied, "and are you trying to teach us?" Then they threw him out. | 34They replied, "You were born completely in sinfulness, and yet you presume to teach us?" So they threw him out. |
When Jesus heard that they had thrown the man out, He found him and asked, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" " | 35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, so he found the man and said to him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" |
Who is He, Sir, that I may believe in Him?" he asked. | 36The man replied, "And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?" |
Jesus answered, "You have seen Him; in fact, He is the One speaking with you."" | 37Jesus told him, "You have seen him; he is the one speaking with you." |
I believe, Lord!" he said, and he worshiped Him. | 38[He said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him. |
Jesus said, "I came into this world for judgment, in order that those who do not see will see and those who do see will become blind." | 39Jesus said,] "For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may gain their sight, and the ones who see may become blind." |
Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and asked Him, "We aren't blind too, are we?" | 40Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and asked him, "We are not blind too, are we?" |
"If you were blind," Jesus told them, "you wouldn't have sin. But now that you say, We see--your sin remains. | 41Jesus replied, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin, but now because you claim that you can see, your guilt remains." |
