| 1when I heal Israel, the sins of Ephraim and the crimes of Samaria will be exposed. For they practice fraud; a thief breaks in; a raiding party pillages outside. | 1When I would have healed Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim was discovered, and the wickedness of Samaria: for they commit falsehood; and the thief cometh in, and the troop of robbers spoileth without. |
| 2But they never consider that I remember all their evil. Now their sins are all around them; they are right in front of My face. | 2And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own doings have beset them about; they are before my face. |
| 3They please the king with their evil, the princes with their lies. | 3They make the king glad with their wickedness, and the princes with their lies. |
| 4All of them commit adultery; they are like an oven heated by a baker who stops stirring the fire from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened. | 4They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceaseth from raising after he hath kneaded the dough, until it be leavened. |
| 5On the day of our king, the princes are sick with the heat of wine-- there is a conspiracy with traitors. | 5In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners. |
| 6For they--their hearts like an oven-- draw him into their oven. Their anger smolders all night; in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire. | 6For they have made ready their heart like an oven, whiles they lie in wait: their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth as a flaming fire. |
| 7All of them are as hot as an oven, and they consume their rulers. All their kings fall; not one of them calls on Me. | 7They are all hot as an oven, and have devoured their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me. |
| 8Ephraim has allowed himself to get mixed up with the nations. Ephraim is unturned bread baked on a griddle. | 8Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned. |
| 9Foreigners consume his strength, but he does not notice. Even his hair is streaked with gray, but he does not notice. | 9Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not. |
| 10Israel's arrogance testifies against them, yet they do not return to Yahweh their God, and for all this, they do not seek Him. | 10And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this. |
| 11So Ephraim has become like a silly, senseless dove; they call to Egypt, and they go to Assyria. | 11Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria. |
| 12As they are going, I will spread My net over them; I will bring them down like birds of the sky. I will discipline them in accordance with the news that reaches their assembly. | 12When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard. |
| 13Woe to them, for they fled from Me; destruction to them, for they rebelled against Me! Though I want to redeem them, they speak lies against Me. | 13Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them! because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me. |
| 14They do not cry to Me from their hearts; rather, they wail on their beds. They slash themselves for grain and new wine; they turn away from Me. | 14And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me. |
| 15I trained and strengthened their arms, but they plot evil against Me. | 15Though I have bound and strengthened their arms, yet do they imagine mischief against me. |
| 16They turn, but not to what is above; they are like a faulty bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword because of the cursing of their tongue. They will be ridiculed for this in the land of Egypt. | 16They return, but not to the most High: they are like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue: this shall be their derision in the land of Egypt. |
