Holman Christian Standard Bible | English Standard Version |
when I heal Israel, the sins of Ephraim and the crimes of Samaria will be exposed. For they practice fraud; a thief breaks in; a raiding party pillages outside. | 1when I would heal Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed, and the evil deeds of Samaria, for they deal falsely; the thief breaks in, and the bandits raid outside. |
But they never consider that I remember all their evil. Now their sins are all around them; they are right in front of My face. | 2But they do not consider that I remember all their evil. Now their deeds surround them; they are before my face. |
They please the king with their evil, the princes with their lies. | 3By their evil they make the king glad, and the princes by their treachery. |
All of them commit adultery; they are like an oven heated by a baker who stops stirring the fire from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened. | 4They are all adulterers; they are like a heated oven whose baker ceases to stir the fire, from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened. |
On the day of our king, the princes are sick with the heat of wine-- there is a conspiracy with traitors. | 5On the day of our king, the princes became sick with the heat of wine; he stretched out his hand with mockers. |
For they--their hearts like an oven-- draw him into their oven. Their anger smolders all night; in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire. | 6For with hearts like an oven they approach their intrigue; all night their anger smolders; in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire. |
All of them are as hot as an oven, and they consume their rulers. All their kings fall; not one of them calls on Me. | 7All of them are hot as an oven, and they devour their rulers. All their kings have fallen, and none of them calls upon me. |
Ephraim has allowed himself to get mixed up with the nations. Ephraim is unturned bread baked on a griddle. | 8Ephraim mixes himself with the peoples; Ephraim is a cake not turned. |
Foreigners consume his strength, but he does not notice. Even his hair is streaked with gray, but he does not notice. | 9Strangers devour his strength, and he knows it not; gray hairs are sprinkled upon him, and he knows it not. |
Israel's arrogance testifies against them, yet they do not return to Yahweh their God, and for all this, they do not seek Him. | 10The pride of Israel testifies to his face; yet they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him, for all this. |
So Ephraim has become like a silly, senseless dove; they call to Egypt, and they go to Assyria. | 11Ephraim is like a dove, silly and without sense, calling to Egypt, going to Assyria. |
As they are going, I will spread My net over them; I will bring them down like birds of the sky. I will discipline them in accordance with the news that reaches their assembly. | 12As they go, I will spread over them my net; I will bring them down like birds of the heavens; I will discipline them according to the report made to their congregation. |
Woe to them, for they fled from Me; destruction to them, for they rebelled against Me! Though I want to redeem them, they speak lies against Me. | 13Woe to them, for they have strayed from me! Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me! I would redeem them, but they speak lies against me. |
They do not cry to Me from their hearts; rather, they wail on their beds. They slash themselves for grain and new wine; they turn away from Me. | 14They do not cry to me from the heart, but they wail upon their beds; for grain and wine they gash themselves; they rebel against me. |
I trained and strengthened their arms, but they plot evil against Me. | 15Although I trained and strengthened their arms, yet they devise evil against me. |
They turn, but not to what is above; they are like a faulty bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword because of the cursing of their tongue. They will be ridiculed for this in the land of Egypt. | 16They return, but not upward; they are like a treacherous bow; their princes shall fall by the sword because of the insolence of their tongue. This shall be their derision in the land of Egypt. |
