when I heal Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim and the crimes of Samaria will be exposed. For they practice fraud; a thief breaks in; a raiding party pillages outside.1whenever I want to heal Israel, the sin of Ephraim is revealed, and the evil deeds of Samaria are exposed. For they do what is wrong; thieves break into houses, and gangs rob people out in the streets.
But they never consider that I remember all their evil. Now their actions are all around them; they are right in front of my face.2They do not realize that I remember all of their wicked deeds. Their evil deeds have now surrounded them; their sinful deeds are always before me.
They please the king with their evil, the princes with their lies.3The royal advisers delight the king with their evil schemes, the princes make him glad with their lies.
All of them commit adultery; they are like an oven heated by a baker who stops stirring the fire from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened.4They are all like bakers, they are like a smoldering oven; they are like a baker who does not stoke the fire until the kneaded dough is ready for baking.
On the day of our king, the princes are sick with the heat of wine--there is a conspiracy with traitors.5At the celebration of their king, his princes become inflamed with wine; they conspire with evildoers.
For they--their hearts like an oven--draw him into their oven. Their anger smolders all night; in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.6They approach him, all the while plotting against him. Their hearts are like an oven; their anger smolders all night long, but in the morning it bursts into a flaming fire.
All of them are as hot as an oven, and they consume their rulers. All their kings fall; not one of them calls on me.7All of them are blazing like an oven; they devour their rulers. All of their kings fall--and none of them call on me!
Ephraim has allowed himself to get mixed up with the nations. Ephraim is unturned bread baked on a griddle.8Ephraim has mixed itself like flour among the nations; Ephraim is like a ruined cake of bread that is scorched on one side.
Foreigners consume his strength, but he does not notice. Even his hair is streaked with gray, but he does not notice.9Foreigners are consuming what his strenuous labor produced, but he does not recognize it! His head is filled with gray hair, but he does not realize it!
Israel's arrogance testifies against them, yet they do not return to the LORD their God, and for all this, they do not seek him.10The arrogance of Israel testifies against him, yet they refuse to return to the LORD their God! In spite of all this they refuse to seek him!
So Ephraim has become like a silly, senseless dove; they call to Egypt, and they go to Assyria.11Ephraim has been like a dove, easily deceived and lacking discernment. They called to Egypt for help; they turned to Assyria for protection.
As they are going, I will spread my net over them; I will bring them down like birds of the sky. I will discipline them in accordance with the news that reaches their assembly.12I will throw my bird net over them while they are flying, I will bring them down like birds in the sky; I will discipline them when I hear them flocking together.
Woe to them, for they fled from me; destruction to them, for they rebelled against me! Though I want to redeem them, they speak lies against me.13Woe to them! For they have fled from me! Destruction to them! For they have rebelled against me! I want to deliver them, but they have lied to me.
They do not cry to me from their hearts; rather, they wail on their beds. They slash themselves for grain and new wine; they turn away from me.14They do not pray to me, but howl in distress on their beds; They slash themselves for grain and new wine, but turn away from me.
I trained and strengthened their arms, but they plot evil against me.15Although I trained and strengthened them, they plot evil against me!
They turn, but not to what is above; they are like a faulty bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword because of their insolent tongue. They will be ridiculed for this in the land of Egypt.16They turn to Baal; they are like an unreliable bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword because their prayers to Baal have made me angry. So people will disdain them in the land of Egypt.
