| 1Then the LORD said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the originals, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. | 1Then the LORD told Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones. I will write on them the same words that were on the tablets you smashed. |
| 2Be ready in the morning, and come up on Mount Sinai to present yourself before Me on the mountaintop. | 2Be ready in the morning to climb up Mount Sinai and present yourself to me on the top of the mountain. |
| 3No one may go up with you; in fact, no one may be seen anywhere on the mountain—not even the flocks or herds may graze in front of the mountain.” | 3No one else may come with you. In fact, no one is to appear anywhere on the mountain. Do not even let the flocks or herds graze near the mountain.” |
| 4So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the originals. He rose early in the morning, and taking the two stone tablets in his hands, he went up Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him. | 4So Moses chiseled out two tablets of stone like the first ones. Early in the morning he climbed Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him, and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands. |
| 5And the LORD descended in a cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed His name, the LORD. | 5Then the LORD came down in a cloud and stood there with him; and he called out his own name, Yahweh. |
| 6Then the LORD passed in front of Moses and called out: “The LORD, the LORD God, is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness, | 6The LORD passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The LORD! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. |
| 7maintaining loving devotion to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin. Yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished; He will visit the iniquity of the fathers on their children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.” | 7I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.” |
| 8Moses immediately bowed down to the ground and worshiped. | 8Moses immediately threw himself to the ground and worshiped. |
| 9“O Lord,” he said, “if I have indeed found favor in Your sight, my Lord, please go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our iniquity and sin, and take us as Your inheritance.” | 9And he said, “O Lord, if it is true that I have found favor with you, then please travel with us. Yes, this is a stubborn and rebellious people, but please forgive our iniquity and our sins. Claim us as your own special possession.” |
| 10And the LORD said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will perform wonders that have never been done in any nation in all the world. All the people among whom you live will see the LORD’s work, for it is an awesome thing that I am doing with you. | 10The LORD replied, “Listen, I am making a covenant with you in the presence of all your people. I will perform miracles that have never been performed anywhere in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people around you will see the power of the LORD—the awesome power I will display for you. |
| 11Observe what I command you this day. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. | 11But listen carefully to everything I command you today. Then I will go ahead of you and drive out the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. |
| 12Be careful not to make a treaty with the inhabitants of the land you are entering, lest they become a snare in your midst. | 12“Be very careful never to make a treaty with the people who live in the land where you are going. If you do, you will follow their evil ways and be trapped. |
| 13Rather, you must tear down their altars, smash their sacred stones, and chop down their Asherah poles. | 13Instead, you must break down their pagan altars, smash their sacred pillars, and cut down their Asherah poles. |
| 14For you must not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. | 14You must worship no other gods, for the LORD, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you. |
| 15Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you, and you will eat their sacrifices. | 15“You must not make a treaty of any kind with the people living in the land. They lust after their gods, offering sacrifices to them. They will invite you to join them in their sacrificial meals, and you will go with them. |
| 16And when you take some of their daughters as brides for your sons, their daughters will prostitute themselves to their gods and cause your sons to do the same. | 16Then you will accept their daughters, who sacrifice to other gods, as wives for your sons. And they will seduce your sons to commit adultery against me by worshiping other gods. |
| 17You shall make no molten gods for yourselves. | 17You must not make any gods of molten metal for yourselves. |
| 18You are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days at the appointed time in the month of Abib, you are to eat unleavened bread as I commanded you. For in the month of Abib you came out of Egypt. | 18“You must celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast, just as I commanded you. Celebrate this festival annually at the appointed time in early spring, in the month of Abib, for that is the anniversary of your departure from Egypt. |
| 19The first offspring of every womb belongs to Me, including all the firstborn males among your livestock, whether cattle or sheep. | 19“The firstborn of every animal belongs to me, including the firstborn males from your herds of cattle and your flocks of sheep and goats. |
| 20You must redeem the firstborn of a donkey with a lamb; but if you do not redeem it, you are to break its neck. You must redeem all the firstborn of your sons. No one shall appear before Me empty-handed. | 20A firstborn donkey may be bought back from the LORD by presenting a lamb or young goat in its place. But if you do not buy it back, you must break its neck. However, you must buy back every firstborn son. “No one may appear before me without an offering. |
| 21Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even in the seasons of plowing and harvesting, you must rest. | 21“You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but on the seventh day you must stop working, even during the seasons of plowing and harvest. |
| 22And you are to celebrate the Feast of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year. | 22“You must celebrate the Festival of Harvest with the first crop of the wheat harvest, and celebrate the Festival of the Final Harvest at the end of the harvest season. |
| 23Three times a year all your males are to appear before the Lord GOD, the God of Israel. | 23Three times each year every man in Israel must appear before the Sovereign, the LORD, the God of Israel. |
| 24For I will drive out the nations before you and enlarge your borders, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times a year to appear before the LORD your God. | 24I will drive out the other nations ahead of you and expand your territory, so no one will covet and conquer your land while you appear before the LORD your God three times each year. |
| 25Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to Me along with anything leavened, and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Feast remain until morning. | 25“You must not offer the blood of my sacrificial offerings together with any baked goods containing yeast. And none of the meat of the Passover sacrifice may be kept over until the next morning. |
| 26Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God. You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.” | 26“As you harvest your crops, bring the very best of the first harvest to the house of the LORD your God. “You must not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.” |
| 27The LORD also said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” | 27Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write down all these instructions, for they represent the terms of the covenant I am making with you and with Israel.” |
| 28So Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments. | 28Moses remained there on the mountain with the LORD forty days and forty nights. In all that time he ate no bread and drank no water. And the LORD wrote the terms of the covenant—the Ten Commandments —on the stone tablets. |
| 29And when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was unaware that his face had become radiant from speaking with the LORD. | 29When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, he wasn’t aware that his face had become radiant because he had spoken to the LORD. |
| 30Aaron and all the Israelites looked at Moses, and behold, his face was radiant. And they were afraid to approach him. | 30So when Aaron and the people of Israel saw the radiance of Moses’ face, they were afraid to come near him. |
| 31But Moses called out to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke to them. | 31But Moses called out to them and asked Aaron and all the leaders of the community to come over, and he talked with them. |
| 32And after this all the Israelites came near, and Moses commanded them to do everything that the LORD had told him on Mount Sinai. | 32Then all the people of Israel approached him, and Moses gave them all the instructions the LORD had given him on Mount Sinai. |
| 33When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. | 33When Moses finished speaking with them, he covered his face with a veil. |
| 34But whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with Him, he would remove the veil until he came out. And when he came out, he would tell the Israelites what he had been commanded, | 34But whenever he went into the Tent of Meeting to speak with the LORD, he would remove the veil until he came out again. Then he would give the people whatever instructions the LORD had given him, |
| 35and the Israelites would see that the face of Moses was radiant. So Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the LORD. | 35and the people of Israel would see the radiant glow of his face. So he would put the veil over his face until he returned to speak with the LORD. |
