Berean Study Bible | International Standard Version |
As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, look at the magnificent stones and buildings!” | 1As Jesus was leaving the Temple, one of his disciples told him, "Look, Teacher, what large stones and what beautiful buildings!" |
“Do you see all these great buildings?” Jesus replied. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” | 2"Do you see these large buildings?" Jesus responded. "Not one stone here will be left on another that will not be torn down." |
While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately, | 3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives facing the Temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew were asking him privately, |
“Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to be fulfilled?” | 4"Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign when these things will be put into effect?" |
Jesus began by telling them, “See to it that no one deceives you. | 5Jesus began to say to them, "See to it that no one deceives you. |
Many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am He,’ and will deceive many. | 6Many will come in my name and say, 'I AM,' and they will deceive many people. |
When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come. | 7But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, stop being alarmed. These things must take place, but the end hasn't come yet, |
Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, as well as famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. | 8because nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes and famines in various places. These things are only the beginning of the birth pains." |
So be on your guard. You will be delivered over to the councils and beaten in the synagogues. On My account you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. | 9"As for yourselves, be on your guard! People will hand you over to local councils, and you will be beaten in their synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings to testify to them because of me. |
And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all the nations. | 10But first, the gospel must be proclaimed to all nations. |
But when they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand what to say. Instead, speak whatever you are given at that time, for it will not be you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. | 11When they take you away and hand you over for trial, don't worry ahead of time about what you will say. Instead, say whatever is given to you at that time, because it won't be you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. |
Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against their parents and have them put to death. | 12Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. |
You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. | 13You will be hated continuously by everyone because of my name. But the person who endures to the end will be saved." |
So when you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. | 14"So when you see the destructive desecration standing where it should not be (let the reader take note), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. |
Let no one on the housetop go back inside to retrieve anything from his house. | 15The one who is on his housetop must not come down and go into his house to take anything out of it, |
And let no one in the field return for his cloak. | 16and the one who's in the field must not turn back to get his coat. |
How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing mothers! | 17"How terrible it will be for women who are pregnant or who are nursing babies in those days! |
Pray that this will not occur in the winter. | 18Pray that it may not be in winter, |
For those will be days of tribulation unmatched from the beginning of God’s creation until now, and never to be seen again. | 19because those days will be a time of suffering, a kind that has not happened from the beginning of God's creation until now, and certainly will never happen again. |
If the Lord had not cut short those days, nobody would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom He has chosen, He has cut them short. | 20If the Lord had not shortened those days, no one would be saved. But for the sake of the elect whom he has chosen, he has shortened those days. |
At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There He is!’ do not believe it. | 21"At that time, if anyone says to you, 'Look! Here is the Messiah!', or, 'Look! There he is!' don't believe it, |
For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders that would deceive even the elect, if that were possible. | 22because false messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce signs and omens to deceive, if possible, the elect. |
So be on your guard; I have told you everything in advance. | 23So be on your guard! I've told you everything before it happens." |
But in those days, after that tribulation: ‘The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; | 24"But after the suffering of those days, 'The sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, |
the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.’ | 25the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of heaven will be shaken loose.' |
At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. | 26Then people will see 'the Son of Man coming in clouds' with great power and glory. |
And He will send out the angels to gather His elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. | 27He'll send out his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven." |
Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branches become tender and sprout leaves, you know that summer is near. | 28"Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches become tender and it produces leaves, you know that summer is near. |
So also, when you see these things happening, know that He is near, right at the door. | 29In the same way, when you see these things taking place, you will know that the Son of Man is near, right at the door. |
Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened. | 30I tell all of you with certainty, this generation will not disappear until all these things take place. |
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away. | 31Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear." |
No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. | 32"No one knows when that day or hour will come —not the angels in heaven, not the Son, but only the Father. |
Be on your guard and stay alert! For you do not know when the appointed time will come. | 33Be careful! Watch out! Because you don't know when the time will come. |
It is like a man going on a journey who left his house, put each servant in charge of his own task, and instructed the doorkeeper to keep watch. | 34It's like a man who went on a trip. As he left home, he put his servants in charge, each with his own work, and he ordered the doorkeeper to be alert. |
Therefore keep watch, because you do not know when the master of the house will return—whether in the evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or in the morning. | 35So keep on watching, because you don't know when the master of the house is coming—whether in the evening, at three o'clock in the morning, or at dawn. |
Otherwise, he may arrive without notice and find you sleeping. | 36Otherwise, he may come suddenly and find you asleep. |
And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Keep watch!” | 37I'm telling you what I'm telling everyone: Be alert!" |
