But Jesus rebuked the spirit.
In the context of Mark 1, Jesus is in Capernaum, a town on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, known for its fishing industry and as a hub of Jesus' ministry. The act of rebuking the spirit demonstrates Jesus' authority over the spiritual realm, a theme prevalent throughout the Gospels. This authority is significant as it fulfills Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah having dominion over evil (Isaiah 61:1). The term "rebuke" is often used in the Gospels to describe Jesus' command over nature and demons, indicating His divine power (Mark 4:39).

“Be silent!” He said.
The command for the spirit to be silent underscores Jesus' control over the situation. In the cultural context of the time, exorcisms were not uncommon, but Jesus' method was unique. Unlike other exorcists who used elaborate rituals, Jesus simply spoke with authority. This command also serves to prevent the spirit from revealing Jesus' identity prematurely, aligning with the theme of the "Messianic Secret" in Mark, where Jesus often instructs others to keep His identity concealed until the appropriate time (Mark 8:30).

“Come out of him!”
This phrase highlights Jesus' compassion and mission to liberate those oppressed by evil. The immediate obedience of the spirit to Jesus' command illustrates His supreme authority. This act of deliverance is a foretaste of the ultimate victory over evil that Jesus would achieve through His death and resurrection. It also connects to the broader biblical narrative of God delivering His people, reminiscent of the Exodus story where God freed the Israelites from bondage (Exodus 3:7-8). Jesus' actions here are a type of His redemptive work, pointing to His role as the ultimate Deliverer.

Verse 25. - Hold thy peace, and come out of him. It was necessary that our Lord should at once assert his absolute power over the evil spirits; and not only this, but also that he should show that he had nothing to do with them. Later on in his ministry it was objected to him that he cast out devils by the prince of the devils. Then, further, the time was not yet arrived when Christ was to be publicly proclaimed as the Son of God. This great truth was to be gradually unfolded, and the people were to be persuaded by many miracles. But at present they were not prepared for this, and therefore our Lord charged his apostles that they should not make him known.
