The Mission of John the Baptist 1 2As it is written in the prophets, "Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee:" 3and again, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight:" accordingly John came baptizing in the wilderness, 4and preaching the baptism of repentance in order to the remission of sins; 5and all the country of Judea, and those of Jerusalem, went out to him, and were all baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6And John was clothed with camels hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and he lived upon locusts and wild honey: and he preached, 7saying, There cometh after me one mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop and unloose. 8I indeed have baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the holy Spirit. 9And in those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in Jordan: 10and as soon as He came up from the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him. 11And there was a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. The Temptation and Preaching of Jesus 12And immediately the Spirit taketh Him out into the wilderness: 13and He was there in the wilderness forty days tempted by Satan, and among the wild beasts: and angels ministred unto Him.
Now after John was cast into prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
and saying, The First Disciples 16And as He was walking by the sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea,
(for they were fishermen,) and Jesus said unto them, Jesus Expels an Unclean Spirit 21And they went into Capernaum: and going directly into the synagogue on the sabbath, He taught the people: and they were astonished at his doctrine;
for He taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
And there was in their synagogue a man with an impure spirit,
and he cried out, saying, Let us alone, what have we to do with thee, Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee, who thou art, the holy one of God.
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Jesus Heals at Peter’s House 29And as soon as they came out of the synagogue, they went into the house of Simon and Andrew, together with James and John.
And Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever: and they immediately told Him of her:
and He came to her, and taking her by the hand raised her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she waited upon them.
And in the evening, when the sun set, they brought to Him all that were ill, and demoniacs:
and the whole city was gathered together at the door;
and He healed many that were ill of various diseases, and cast out many devils, and suffered not the devils to say that they knew Him. Jesus Prays and Preaches 35And in the morning, before it was light, He rose up and went out, and retired into a solitary place, and there prayed.
And Simon, and they that were with him, went in quest of Him:
and when they found Him, they said to Him, all the people are seeking for thee.
And He saith unto them, The Leper’s Prayer 40And there came to Him a leper, beseeching Him, and kneeling down to Him, and saying unto Him, If thou wilt, thou canst cleanse me:
