Job 36
1. Elihu shows how God is just in his ways
16. How Job's sins hinder God's blessings
24. God's works are to be magnified

God rescues the afflicted by their affliction
This phrase highlights the paradoxical nature of divine intervention, where suffering becomes a means of deliverance. In the context of Job, Elihu is speaking, suggesting that God uses suffering to teach and refine individuals. This aligns with the broader biblical theme that God disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12:6). The affliction itself becomes a tool for spiritual growth and transformation, echoing the idea found in Romans 5:3-5, where suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope. Historically, the concept of suffering as a form of divine instruction was prevalent in ancient Near Eastern cultures, where trials were often seen as tests or purifications.

and opens their ears in oppression
This part of the verse suggests that through oppression, individuals become more receptive to God's voice and guidance. The "opening of ears" is a metaphor for gaining understanding or insight, similar to the prophetic call in Isaiah 50:4-5, where the servant's ears are opened to hear as one being taught. In the cultural context of the ancient world, listening was a key aspect of wisdom and learning. This phrase implies that through hardship, people are more likely to turn to God and seek His wisdom, much like the Israelites did during their times of distress in the wilderness (Exodus 3:7-10). Theologically, this can be seen as a type of Christ, who, through His own suffering, opened the way for humanity to hear and respond to God's call for salvation.

Teaching Points
Purpose in Affliction
God uses affliction as a tool to teach and refine us. It is not merely punitive but can be transformative, leading us to deeper understanding and reliance on Him.

Hearing God in Hardship
Suffering can open our ears to God's voice. In times of distress, we may become more attuned to His guidance and wisdom.

God's Sovereignty and Compassion
Even in our suffering, God is sovereign and compassionate. He is actively involved in our lives, working through our trials to bring about His purposes.

Growth Through Trials
Trials are opportunities for spiritual growth. They can strengthen our faith and character, drawing us closer to God.

Trust in God's Deliverance
We can trust that God will deliver us from our afflictions, using them to accomplish His will and ultimately for our good.(15) He delivereth the poor in his affliction.--The point of Elihu's discourse is rather that He delivereth the afflicted by his affliction; He makes use of the very affliction to deliver him by it as a means, "and openeth their ears by oppression."

Verse 15. - He delivereth the poor in his affliction; rather, he delivereth the afflicted by his affliction (see the Revised Version). Elihu recurs to what he had said in ver. 10 with respect to the discipline of affliction. The bulk of the afflictions sent by God are, according to him, intended to act medicinally. If the afflicted man receives them aright, they are the very means of his deliverance (comp. Psalm 119:67, 71; Hebrews 12:11). And openeth their ears in oppression; rather, by suffering. Their sufferings lead them to God, cause them to pay more attention to his Word, lead them to open their ears to his inward voice.
