Therefore hear, O nations
This phrase serves as a call to attention, not just for Israel, but for all nations. It underscores the universal scope of God's message and judgment. The use of "nations" indicates that the message is not limited to the Jewish people but extends to Gentiles as well. This reflects the biblical theme that God's sovereignty and justice are applicable to all humanity, as seen in other scriptures like Isaiah 34:1 and Psalm 96:10. The call to "hear" is a common prophetic device used to emphasize the importance and urgency of the message.

and learn, O congregations
The term "congregations" can refer to assemblies or gatherings of people, possibly indicating both religious and secular groups. This suggests that the message is meant for both the religious leaders and the general populace. The call to "learn" implies that there is a lesson or moral to be understood from the forthcoming events. This aligns with the biblical principle that God's actions serve as instruction for His people, as seen in Deuteronomy 4:10. The dual address to "nations" and "congregations" emphasizes the comprehensive reach of God's word.

what will happen to them
This phrase introduces the element of prophecy, indicating that a specific event or series of events is about to unfold. The "them" refers to the people of Judah and Jerusalem, who are the primary subjects of Jeremiah's prophecies. Historically, this points to the impending Babylonian invasion and exile, a pivotal event in Jewish history. Theologically, it serves as a warning of the consequences of disobedience to God's covenant. This prophetic warning is consistent with other biblical passages that foretell judgment, such as Amos 3:7 and Ezekiel 33:33. The phrase also serves as a reminder of God's omniscience and the certainty of His plans.

Persons / Places / Events

A prophet called by God to deliver messages of warning and judgment to the people of Judah and Jerusalem. His ministry spanned over 40 years during a tumultuous period in Israel's history.

2. Nations
Refers to the surrounding nations that are called to witness the judgment that God is about to bring upon Judah. This highlights the universal scope of God's justice.

3. Congregations
This term can refer to the assemblies or gatherings of people, possibly indicating both the people of Judah and the surrounding nations who are to learn from the impending judgment.

4. Judah and Jerusalem
The primary audience of Jeremiah's prophecies, who were warned repeatedly about their disobedience and the coming judgment.

5. God's Judgment
The central event in this passage, where God declares the consequences of Judah's persistent rebellion and sin.
Teaching Points
The Universality of God's Justice
God's call to the nations and congregations to witness His judgment on Judah underscores that His justice is not limited to one people but is a universal principle. We must recognize that God's standards apply to all humanity.

The Importance of Heeding Warnings
Just as Judah was warned repeatedly, we too are given warnings through Scripture and the Holy Spirit. Ignoring these warnings can lead to severe consequences.

Learning from Others' Mistakes
The nations and congregations are called to learn from Judah's impending judgment. We should be attentive to the lessons from biblical history and the experiences of others to avoid similar pitfalls.

The Role of Prophets and Scripture
Jeremiah's role as a prophet highlights the importance of listening to God's messengers and the Scriptures today. They are given to guide, correct, and instruct us in righteousness.

Accountability Before God
The passage reminds us that we are accountable to God for our actions. We must live in a way that honors Him, knowing that He sees and judges all.(18) Therefore hear, ye nations . . .--The obstinate refusal with which the people met the summons of the prophet leads him once more to a solemn appeal (1) to the heathen nations, then (2) to the "congregation" of Israel (as in Exodus and Numbers passim), or, possibly, of mankind collectively, (3) to earth as the witness of the judgments of Jehovah.

What is among them.--Better, what comes to pass for them, i.e., for the sinful people.

Verse 18. - Therefore hear, etc. Remonstrance being useless, the sentence upon Israel can no longer be delayed, and Jehovah summons the nations of the earth as witnesses (comp. Micah 1:2; Isaiah 18:3; Psalm 49:1). O congregation, what is among them. The passage is obscure. "Congregation" can only refer to the foreign nations mentioned in the first clause; for Israel could not be called upon to hear the judgment "upon this people" (ver. 19). There is, however, no other passage in which the word has this reference. The words rendered "what is among them," or "what (shall happen) in them," seem unnaturally laconic, and not as weighty as one would expect after the solemn introduction. If correct, they must of course refer to the Israelites. But Graf's conjecture that the text is corrupt lies near at hand. The least alteration which will remove the difficulties of the passage is that presupposed by the rendering of Aquila (not Symmachus, as St. Jerome says; see Field's 'Hexapla') and J. D. Michaelis, "the testimony which is against them."
