your children and wives
In the context of ancient Israel, the inclusion of "children and wives" highlights the communal and familial nature of the covenant. Families were integral to the social and religious fabric of Israelite society. The mention of children underscores the importance of passing down the covenantal promises and responsibilities to future generations, as seen in Deuteronomy 6:6-7, where parents are instructed to teach God's commandments to their children. Wives, as part of the household, were also participants in the covenant community, reflecting the inclusive nature of God's promises to all members of the family unit.

and the foreigners in your camps
The presence of "foreigners" or "sojourners" within the Israelite community indicates the openness of the covenant to those outside the ethnic boundaries of Israel. This inclusion reflects the broader biblical theme of God's concern for all nations, as seen in Genesis 12:3, where Abraham's descendants are promised to be a blessing to all peoples. The mention of foreigners also points to the social and economic structure of Israel, where non-Israelites could live among the people and participate in certain aspects of community life, as long as they adhered to the covenantal laws (Exodus 12:48-49).

who cut your wood and draw your water—
This phrase refers to the menial tasks often assigned to non-Israelites or those of lower social status within the community. The roles of woodcutters and water drawers were essential for daily life, providing necessary resources for cooking, cleaning, and religious rituals. The inclusion of these individuals in the covenant ceremony emphasizes that God's covenant extends to all, regardless of social status or occupation. This foreshadows the New Testament teaching that in Christ, there is no distinction between Jew and Gentile, slave and free (Galatians 3:28), highlighting the universal nature of God's redemptive plan.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Children and Wives
This refers to the family units within the Israelite community, emphasizing the inclusion of all members of society in the covenant.

2. Foreigners in Your Camps
These are non-Israelites living among the Israelites, highlighting the inclusivity of God's covenant with those who are not ethnically Israelite but are part of the community.

3. Woodcutters and Water Drawers
These roles represent the laborers and servants within the community, indicating that even those in humble positions are included in the covenant.

4. Israelite Camp
The setting is the encampment of the Israelites as they prepare to enter the Promised Land, a significant moment of covenant renewal.

5. Covenant Renewal
The event is a formal renewal of the covenant between God and the Israelites, led by Moses, as they stand on the brink of entering Canaan.
Teaching Points
Inclusivity in God's Covenant
God's covenant is not limited by ethnicity or social status. This verse reminds us that God's promises and commands are for all who are part of His community, regardless of their background or role.

The Value of Every Role
Every person, regardless of their societal role, is valuable in God's eyes. The mention of woodcutters and water drawers underscores that all contributions are significant in the community of faith.

Family and Community Responsibility
The inclusion of children and wives highlights the importance of family and community in spiritual matters. It is a reminder to involve our families in our faith journey and to teach them about God's promises.

Preparation for Promised Blessings
As the Israelites prepared to enter the Promised Land, they renewed their commitment to God. Similarly, we should continually renew our commitment to God as we anticipate His promises in our lives.

Unity in Diversity
The diverse makeup of the covenant community calls us to embrace unity within diversity, recognizing that God’s kingdom includes people from all walks of life.(11) Your little ones.--Compare St. Peter's words on the day of Pentecost: "The promise is unto you and to your children" (Acts 2:39). The covenant with Abraham was that the Almighty would be a God to him and to his seed (Genesis 17:7), including the child of eight days old (Deuteronomy 29:12), and the slave (Deuteronomy 29:13), who were to receive the sign of His covenant in their flesh for an everlasting covenant.

From the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water.--From this Rashi infers that "there were Canaanites who became proselytes in the time of Moses, in the same way as the Gibeonites in the days of Joshua." It may have been so. And we know that there were many female captives of the Midianites who became slaves. (See Numbers 31)

Verses 11-14. - The covenant was a national engagement, and as such included not only the adults and existing generation, but the little ones, the strangers resident in Israel, the lowest menial servants, that is, all the elements of which the nation was composed, as well as their posterity in coming, generations. That thou shouldest enter into covenant. The expression in the Hebrew is a strong one, indicating not a mere formal engagement, but a going thoroughly into the covenant; the phrase is used of the sword going through the land (Leviticus 26:6), and of one going into the pit (Job 33:28). Into his oath. Covenants were confirmed by oath (Genesis 26:28; Hebrews 6:17); hence in Scripture the covenant of God is sometimes called his oath (ver. 14; 1 Chronicles 16:16; Hebrews 7:28). (On ver. 13, cf. Deuteronomy 28:9; Deuteronomy 27:9; Exodus 19:5, 6.)
