Repentance: should be Accompanied by Turning from Sin

Repentance is a fundamental concept in Christian theology, signifying a profound change of mind and heart that leads to a transformation of life. It is not merely an emotional response or feeling of regret but involves a decisive turning away from sin and a turning toward God. This transformation is essential for salvation and is consistently emphasized throughout Scripture.

Biblical Foundation

The call to repentance is a central theme in both the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for repentance, "shuv," means to turn back or return. This concept is vividly illustrated in the prophetic writings, where God calls His people to return to Him and forsake their sinful ways. For instance, in Ezekiel 18:30-31 , God implores, "Therefore, house of Israel, I will judge each of you according to your ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your offenses, so that sin will not be your downfall. Cast away from yourselves all the offenses you have committed, and fashion for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit."

In the New Testament, the Greek word "metanoia" is used, which means a change of mind. John the Baptist and Jesus both began their ministries with a call to repentance. In Matthew 3:2 , John the Baptist declares, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." Similarly, Jesus proclaims in Mark 1:15 , "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!"

Turning from Sin

True repentance is invariably linked with a turning away from sin. It is not enough to feel sorrow for sin; one must also abandon it. This turning is an act of the will, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and is evidenced by a change in behavior. In Acts 3:19 , Peter exhorts the people, "Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord."

The Apostle Paul also emphasizes the necessity of turning from sin as part of repentance. In Acts 26:20 , he recounts his message to both Jews and Gentiles: "I preached that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds worthy of their repentance." This indicates that genuine repentance will produce fruit in keeping with a transformed life.

Repentance and Faith

Repentance is closely linked with faith. The two are inseparable in the process of salvation. While repentance involves turning away from sin, faith involves turning toward God and trusting in Jesus Christ for forgiveness and new life. In Acts 20:21 , Paul summarizes his ministry as "testifying to both Jews and Greeks about repentance to God and faith in our Lord Jesus."

The Role of the Holy Spirit

The ability to repent is a gift from God, enabled by the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit who convicts individuals of their sin and draws them to repentance. In John 16:8 , Jesus explains the work of the Holy Spirit: "And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment."

Repentance in the Life of Believers

Repentance is not a one-time event but a continual aspect of the Christian life. Believers are called to live in a state of ongoing repentance, continually turning away from sin and toward God. This is part of the process of sanctification, as the Holy Spirit works within believers to conform them to the image of Christ. In 1 John 1:9 , the promise is given, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Conclusion

Repentance, accompanied by a turning from sin, is an essential aspect of the Christian faith. It is a transformative process that involves a change of mind, heart, and behavior, leading to a life that reflects the holiness and righteousness of God. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, believers are enabled to live lives of continual repentance and faith, growing in their relationship with God and bearing fruit in keeping with repentance.
