The term "comely" is often used in the Bible to describe beauty, attractiveness, or something that is pleasing to the eye or senses. In a biblical context, it can refer to both physical beauty and the beauty of character or behavior that aligns with God's standards.

Old Testament Usage

In the Old Testament, "comely" is frequently used to describe physical beauty, particularly in the context of women. For example, in Song of Solomon 1:5 , the Shulammite woman declares, "I am dark, yet lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon." Here, "lovely" is synonymous with "comely," indicating an attractiveness that is both physical and deeper in nature.

The term is also used to describe the beauty of Zion or Jerusalem, as seen in Isaiah 52:7 : "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, 'Your God reigns!'" The beauty here is not just physical but also spiritual, reflecting the glory and righteousness of God's people.

New Testament Usage

In the New Testament, the concept of comeliness extends beyond physical appearance to include the beauty of holiness and righteous living. In 1 Corinthians 12:24 , Paul writes about the body of Christ, saying, "whereas our presentable parts have no such need. But God has composed the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it." The idea here is that God has arranged the body of Christ in a way that is comely, or fitting, emphasizing the importance of unity and mutual respect among believers.

Spiritual and Moral Implications

From a spiritual perspective, comeliness is often associated with the inner beauty that comes from a life lived in accordance with God's will. Proverbs 31:30 states, "Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised." This verse highlights the transient nature of physical beauty compared to the enduring comeliness of a godly character.

The Bible also speaks to the comeliness of worship and conduct. In Psalm 93:5 , it is written, "Your testimonies are fully confirmed; holiness adorns Your house, O LORD, for endless days." Here, holiness is described as an adornment, suggesting that a life of holiness is comely in the sight of God.

Cultural and Historical Context

In biblical times, comeliness was often associated with social status and favor. A comely appearance could lead to preferential treatment or opportunities, as seen in the account of Esther, whose beauty and grace won her favor in the eyes of King Xerxes (Esther 2:17).

However, the Bible consistently emphasizes that true comeliness is found in the fear of the Lord and the pursuit of righteousness. This perspective challenges cultural norms that prioritize outward appearance over inner virtue.

In summary, the biblical concept of comeliness encompasses both physical beauty and the deeper, more enduring beauty of a life aligned with God's principles. It serves as a reminder that while outward appearance may hold some value, it is the inner beauty of a godly character that is truly comely in the eyes of the Lord.
