The Hebrew word for "fear" here is "yare," which encompasses a deep respect and reverence, not merely terror or dread. In the biblical context, fearing God is foundational to wisdom and understanding (Proverbs 9:10). It implies a recognition of God's sovereignty and holiness, leading to a life of obedience and worship.
