| 1Now Adam had sexual relations with his wife, Eve, and she became pregnant. When she gave birth to Cain, she said, “With the LORD’s help, I have produced a man!” | 1Now the man had marital relations with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. Then she said, "I have created a man just as the LORD did!" |
| 2Later she gave birth to his brother and named him Abel. When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain cultivated the ground. | 2Then she gave birth to his brother Abel. Abel took care of the flocks, while Cain cultivated the ground. |
| 3When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the LORD. | 3At the designated time Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground for an offering to the LORD. |
| 4Abel also brought a gift—the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The LORD accepted Abel and his gift, | 4But Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock--even the fattest of them. And the LORD was pleased with Abel and his offering, |
| 5but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected. | 5but with Cain and his offering he was not pleased. So Cain became very angry, and his expression was downcast. |
| 6“Why are you so angry?” the LORD asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? | 6Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why is your expression downcast? |
| 7You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.” | 7Is it not true that if you do what is right, you will be fine? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. It desires to dominate you, but you must subdue it." |
| 8One day Cain suggested to his brother, “Let’s go out into the fields.” And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother, Abel, and killed him. | 8Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. |

| 11Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has swallowed your brother’s blood. | 11So now, you are banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. |

| 13Cain replied to the LORD, “My punishment is too great for me to bear! | 13Then Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is too great to endure! |
| 14You have banished me from the land and from your presence; you have made me a homeless wanderer. Anyone who finds me will kill me!” | 14Look! You are driving me off the land today, and I must hide from your presence. I will be a homeless wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me will kill me." |
| 15The LORD replied, “No, for I will give a sevenfold punishment to anyone who kills you.” Then the LORD put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who might try to kill him. | 15But the LORD said to him, "All right then, if anyone kills Cain, Cain will be avenged seven times as much." Then the LORD put a special mark on Cain so that no one who found him would strike him down. |

| 23One day Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; listen to me, you wives of Lamech. I have killed a man who attacked me, a young man who wounded me. | 23Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah! Listen to me! You wives of Lamech, hear my words! I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for hurting me. |
