| 1But there was a certain man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold some property. | 1Now a man named Ananias, together with Sapphira his wife, sold a piece of property. |
| 2He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was the full amount. With his wife’s consent, he kept the rest. | 2He kept back for himself part of the proceeds with his wife's knowledge; he brought only part of it and placed it at the apostles' feet. |
| 3Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the money for yourself. | 3But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back for yourself part of the proceeds from the sale of the land? |
| 4The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. How could you do a thing like this? You weren’t lying to us but to God!” | 4Before it was sold, did it not belong to you? And when it was sold, was the money not at your disposal? How have you thought up this deed in your heart? You have not lied to people but to God!" |
| 5As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. Everyone who heard about it was terrified. | 5When Ananias heard these words he collapsed and died, and great fear gripped all who heard about it. |
| 6Then some young men got up, wrapped him in a sheet, and took him out and buried him. | 6So the young men came, wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him. |
| 7About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. | 7After an interval of about three hours, his wife came in, but she did not know what had happened. |
| 8Peter asked her, “Was this the price you and your husband received for your land?” “Yes,” she replied, “that was the price.” | 8Peter said to her, "Tell me, were the two of you paid this amount for the land?" Sapphira said, "Yes, that much." |
| 9And Peter said, “How could the two of you even think of conspiring to test the Spirit of the Lord like this? The young men who buried your husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you out, too.” | 9Peter then told her, "Why have you agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out!" |
| 10Instantly, she fell to the floor and died. When the young men came in and saw that she was dead, they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. | 10At once she collapsed at his feet and died. So when the young men came in, they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. |
| 11Great fear gripped the entire church and everyone else who heard what had happened. The Apostles Heal Many | 11Great fear gripped the whole church and all who heard about these things. |
| 12The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade. | 12Now many miraculous signs and wonders came about among the people through the hands of the apostles. By common consent they were all meeting together in Solomon's Portico. |
| 13But no one else dared to join them, even though all the people had high regard for them. | 13None of the rest dared to join them, but the people held them in high honor. |
| 14Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord—crowds of both men and women. | 14More and more believers in the Lord were added to their number, crowds of both men and women. |
| 15As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by. | 15Thus they even carried the sick out into the streets, and put them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by at least his shadow would fall on some of them. |
| 16Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed. The Apostles Meet Opposition | 16A crowd of people from the towns around Jerusalem also came together, bringing the sick and those troubled by unclean spirits. They were all being healed. |
| 17The high priest and his officials, who were Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. | 17Now the high priest rose up, and all those with him (that is, the religious party of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy. |
| 18They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. | 18They laid hands on the apostles and put them in a public jail. |
| 19But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the jail, and brought them out. Then he told them, | 19But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, led them out, and said, |
| 20“Go to the Temple and give the people this message of life!” | 20"Go and stand in the temple courts and proclaim to the people all the words of this life." |
| 21So at daybreak the apostles entered the Temple, as they were told, and immediately began teaching. When the high priest and his officials arrived, they convened the high council —the full assembly of the elders of Israel. Then they sent for the apostles to be brought from the jail for trial. | 21When they heard this, they entered the temple courts at daybreak and began teaching. Now when the high priest and those who were with him arrived, they summoned the Sanhedrin--that is, the whole high council of the Israelites--and sent to the jail to have the apostles brought before them. |
| 22But when the Temple guards went to the jail, the men were gone. So they returned to the council and reported, | 22But the officers who came for them did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported, |
| 23“The jail was securely locked, with the guards standing outside, but when we opened the gates, no one was there!” | 23"We found the jail locked securely and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside." |
| 24When the captain of the Temple guard and the leading priests heard this, they were perplexed, wondering where it would all end. | 24Now when the commander of the temple guard and the chief priests heard this report, they were greatly puzzled concerning it, wondering what this could be. |
| 25Then someone arrived with startling news: “The men you put in jail are standing in the Temple, teaching the people!” | 25But someone came and reported to them, "Look! The men you put in prison are standing in the temple courts and teaching the people!" |
| 26The captain went with his Temple guards and arrested the apostles, but without violence, for they were afraid the people would stone them. | 26Then the commander of the temple guard went with the officers and brought the apostles without the use of force (for they were afraid of being stoned by the people). |
| 27Then they brought the apostles before the high council, where the high priest confronted them. | 27When they had brought them, they stood them before the council, and the high priest questioned them, |
| 28“We gave you strict orders never again to teach in this man’s name!” he said. “Instead, you have filled all Jerusalem with your teaching about him, and you want to make us responsible for his death!” | 28saying, "We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name. Look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood on us!" |
| 29But Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than any human authority. | 29But Peter and the apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than people. |
| 30The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead after you killed him by hanging him on a cross. | 30The God of our forefathers raised up Jesus, whom you seized and killed by hanging him on a tree. |
| 31Then God put him in the place of honor at his right hand as Prince and Savior. He did this so the people of Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven. | 31God exalted him to his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. |
| 32We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him.” | 32And we are witnesses of these events, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him." |
| 33When they heard this, the high council was furious and decided to kill them. | 33Now when they heard this, they became furious and wanted to execute them. |
| 34But one member, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, who was an expert in religious law and respected by all the people, stood up and ordered that the men be sent outside the council chamber for a while. | 34But a Pharisee whose name was Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was respected by all the people, stood up in the council and ordered the men to be put outside for a short time. |
| 35Then he said to his colleagues, “Men of Israel, take care what you are planning to do to these men! | 35Then he said to the council, "Men of Israel, pay close attention to what you are about to do to these men. |
| 36Some time ago there was that fellow Theudas, who pretended to be someone great. About 400 others joined him, but he was killed, and all his followers went their various ways. The whole movement came to nothing. | 36For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and nothing came of it. |
| 37After him, at the time of the census, there was Judas of Galilee. He got people to follow him, but he was killed, too, and all his followers were scattered. | 37After him Judas the Galilean arose in the days of the census, and incited people to follow him in revolt. He too was killed, and all who followed him were scattered. |
| 38“So my advice is, leave these men alone. Let them go. If they are planning and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown. | 38So in this case I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, because if this plan or this undertaking originates with people, it will come to nothing, |
| 39But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God!” | 39but if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them, or you may even be found fighting against God." He convinced them, |
| 40The others accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go. | 40and they summoned the apostles and had them beaten. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them. |
| 41The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus. | 41So they left the council rejoicing because they had been considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name. |
| 42And every day, in the Temple and from house to house, they continued to teach and preach this message: “Jesus is the Messiah.” | 42And every day both in the temple courts and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus was the Christ. |
