Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the LORD: “I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; he has hurled both horse and rider into the sea.1Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to the LORD, and said, "I will sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted; The horse and its rider He has hurled into the sea.
The LORD is my strength and my song; he has given me victory. This is my God, and I will praise him— my father’s God, and I will exalt him!2"The LORD is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation; This is my God, and I will praise Him; My father's God, and I will extol Him.
The LORD is a warrior; Yahweh is his name!3"The LORD is a warrior; The LORD is His name.
Pharaoh’s chariots and army he has hurled into the sea. The finest of Pharaoh’s officers are drowned in the Red Sea.4"Pharaoh's chariots and his army He has cast into the sea; And the choicest of his officers are drowned in the Red Sea.
The deep waters gushed over them; they sank to the bottom like a stone.5"The deeps cover them; They went down into the depths like a stone.
“Your right hand, O LORD, is glorious in power. Your right hand, O LORD, smashes the enemy.6"Your right hand, O LORD, is majestic in power, Your right hand, O LORD, shatters the enemy.
In the greatness of your majesty, you overthrow those who rise against you. You unleash your blazing fury; it consumes them like straw.7"And in the greatness of Your excellence You overthrow those who rise up against You; You send forth Your burning anger, and it consumes them as chaff.
At the blast of your breath, the waters piled up! The surging waters stood straight like a wall; in the heart of the sea the deep waters became hard.8"At the blast of Your nostrils the waters were piled up, The flowing waters stood up like a heap; The deeps were congealed in the heart of the sea.
“The enemy boasted, ‘I will chase them and catch up with them. I will plunder them and consume them. I will flash my sword; my powerful hand will destroy them.’9"The enemy said, 'I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; My desire shall be gratified against them; I will draw out my sword, my hand will destroy them.'
But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.10"You blew with Your wind, the sea covered them; They sank like lead in the mighty waters.
“Who is like you among the gods, O LORD— glorious in holiness, awesome in splendor, performing great wonders?11"Who is like You among the gods, O LORD? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, Awesome in praises, working wonders?
You raised your right hand, and the earth swallowed our enemies.12"You stretched out Your right hand, The earth swallowed them.
“With your unfailing love you lead the people you have redeemed. In your might, you guide them to your sacred home.13"In Your lovingkindness You have led the people whom You have redeemed; In Your strength You have guided them to Your holy habitation.
The peoples hear and tremble; anguish grips those who live in Philistia.14"The peoples have heard, they tremble; Anguish has gripped the inhabitants of Philistia.
The leaders of Edom are terrified; the nobles of Moab tremble. All who live in Canaan melt away;15"Then the chiefs of Edom were dismayed; The leaders of Moab, trembling grips them; All the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away.
terror and dread fall upon them. The power of your arm makes them lifeless as stone until your people pass by, O LORD, until the people you purchased pass by.16"Terror and dread fall upon them; By the greatness of Your arm they are motionless as stone; Until Your people pass over, O LORD, Until the people pass over whom You have purchased.
You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain— the place, O LORD, reserved for your own dwelling, the sanctuary, O Lord, that your hands have established.17"You will bring them and plant them in the mountain of Your inheritance, The place, O LORD, which You have made for Your dwelling, The sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established.
The LORD will reign forever and ever!”18"The LORD shall reign forever and ever."
When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and charioteers rushed into the sea, the LORD brought the water crashing down on them. But the people of Israel had walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground!19For the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, and the LORD brought back the waters of the sea on them, but the sons of Israel walked on dry land through the midst of the sea.
Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine and led all the women as they played their tambourines and danced.20Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took the timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dancing.
And Miriam sang this song: “Sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; he has hurled both horse and rider into the sea.” Bitter Water at Marah21Miriam answered them, "Sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted; The horse and his rider He has hurled into the sea."
Then Moses led the people of Israel away from the Red Sea, and they moved out into the desert of Shur. They traveled in this desert for three days without finding any water.22Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness and found no water.
When they came to the oasis of Marah, the water was too bitter to drink. So they called the place Marah (which means “bitter”).23When they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter; therefore it was named Marah.
Then the people complained and turned against Moses. “What are we going to drink?” they demanded.24So the people grumbled at Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?"
So Moses cried out to the LORD for help, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and this made the water good to drink. It was there at Marah that the LORD set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him.25Then he cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a tree; and he threw it into the waters, and the waters became sweet. There He made for them a statute and regulation, and there He tested them.
He said, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping all his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians; for I am the LORD who heals you.”26And He said, "If you will give earnest heed to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians; for I, the LORD, am your healer."
After leaving Marah, the Israelites traveled on to the oasis of Elim, where they found twelve springs and seventy palm trees. They camped there beside the water.27Then they came to Elim where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms, and they camped there beside the waters.
