Then the whole community of Israel set out from Elim and journeyed into the wilderness of Sin, between Elim and Mount Sinai. They arrived there on the fifteenth day of the second month, one month after leaving the land of Egypt. | 1Then they set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt. |
There, too, the whole community of Israel complained about Moses and Aaron. | 2The whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. |
“If only the LORD had killed us back in Egypt,” they moaned. “There we sat around pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into this wilderness to starve us all to death.” | 3The sons of Israel said to them, "Would that we had died by the LORD'S hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger." |
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Look, I’m going to rain down food from heaven for you. Each day the people can go out and pick up as much food as they need for that day. I will test them in this to see whether or not they will follow my instructions. | 4Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My instruction. |
On the sixth day they will gather food, and when they prepare it, there will be twice as much as usual.” | 5"On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily." |
So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, “By evening you will realize it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt. | 6So Moses and Aaron said to all the sons of Israel, "At evening you will know that the LORD has brought you out of the land of Egypt; |
In the morning you will see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your complaints, which are against him, not against us. What have we done that you should complain about us?” | 7and in the morning you will see the glory of the LORD, for He hears your grumblings against the LORD; and what are we, that you grumble against us?" |
Then Moses added, “The LORD will give you meat to eat in the evening and bread to satisfy you in the morning, for he has heard all your complaints against him. What have we done? Yes, your complaints are against the LORD, not against us.” | 8Moses said, "This will happen when the LORD gives you meat to eat in the evening, and bread to the full in the morning; for the LORD hears your grumblings which you grumble against Him. And what are we? Your grumblings are not against us but against the LORD." |
Then Moses said to Aaron, “Announce this to the entire community of Israel: ‘Present yourselves before the LORD, for he has heard your complaining.’” | 9Then Moses said to Aaron, "Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, 'Come near before the LORD, for He has heard your grumblings.'" |
And as Aaron spoke to the whole community of Israel, they looked out toward the wilderness. There they could see the awesome glory of the LORD in the cloud. | 10It came about as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. |
Then the LORD said to Moses, | 11And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, |
“I have heard the Israelites’ complaints. Now tell them, ‘In the evening you will have meat to eat, and in the morning you will have all the bread you want. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.’” | 12"I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying, 'At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the LORD your God.'" |
That evening vast numbers of quail flew in and covered the camp. And the next morning the area around the camp was wet with dew. | 13So it came about at evening that the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. |
When the dew evaporated, a flaky substance as fine as frost blanketed the ground. | 14When the layer of dew evaporated, behold, on the surface of the wilderness there was a fine flake-like thing, fine as the frost on the ground. |
The Israelites were puzzled when they saw it. “What is it?” they asked each other. They had no idea what it was. And Moses told them, “It is the food the LORD has given you to eat. | 15When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another, "What is it?" For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, "It is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat. |
These are the LORD’s instructions: Each household should gather as much as it needs. Pick up two quarts for each person in your tent.” | 16"This is what the LORD has commanded, 'Gather of it every man as much as he should eat; you shall take an omer apiece according to the number of persons each of you has in his tent.'" |
So the people of Israel did as they were told. Some gathered a lot, some only a little. | 17The sons of Israel did so, and some gathered much and some little. |
But when they measured it out, everyone had just enough. Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over, and those who gathered only a little had enough. Each family had just what it needed. | 18When they measured it with an omer, he who had gathered much had no excess, and he who had gathered little had no lack; every man gathered as much as he should eat. |
Then Moses told them, “Do not keep any of it until morning.” | 19Moses said to them, "Let no man leave any of it until morning." |
But some of them didn’t listen and kept some of it until morning. But by then it was full of maggots and had a terrible smell. Moses was very angry with them. | 20But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and became foul; and Moses was angry with them. |
After this the people gathered the food morning by morning, each family according to its need. And as the sun became hot, the flakes they had not picked up melted and disappeared. | 21They gathered it morning by morning, every man as much as he should eat; but when the sun grew hot, it would melt. |
On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much as usual—four quarts for each person instead of two. Then all the leaders of the community came and asked Moses for an explanation. | 22Now on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. When all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, |
He told them, “This is what the LORD commanded: Tomorrow will be a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath day set apart for the LORD. So bake or boil as much as you want today, and set aside what is left for tomorrow.” | 23then he said to them, "This is what the LORD meant: Tomorrow is a sabbath observance, a holy sabbath to the LORD. Bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over put aside to be kept until morning." |
So they put some aside until morning, just as Moses had commanded. And in the morning the leftover food was wholesome and good, without maggots or odor. | 24So they put it aside until morning, as Moses had ordered, and it did not become foul nor was there any worm in it. |
Moses said, “Eat this food today, for today is a Sabbath day dedicated to the LORD. There will be no food on the ground today. | 25Moses said, "Eat it today, for today is a sabbath to the LORD; today you will not find it in the field. |
You may gather the food for six days, but the seventh day is the Sabbath. There will be no food on the ground that day.” | 26"Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be none." |
Some of the people went out anyway on the seventh day, but they found no food. | 27It came about on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. |
The LORD asked Moses, “How long will these people refuse to obey my commands and instructions? | 28Then the LORD said to Moses, "How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My instructions? |
They must realize that the Sabbath is the LORD’s gift to you. That is why he gives you a two-day supply on the sixth day, so there will be enough for two days. On the Sabbath day you must each stay in your place. Do not go out to pick up food on the seventh day.” | 29"See, the LORD has given you the sabbath; therefore He gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain every man in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day." |
So the people did not gather any food on the seventh day. | 30So the people rested on the seventh day. |
The Israelites called the food manna. It was white like coriander seed, and it tasted like honey wafers. | 31The house of Israel named it manna, and it was like coriander seed, white, and its taste was like wafers with honey. |
Then Moses said, “This is what the LORD has commanded: Fill a two-quart container with manna to preserve it for your descendants. Then later generations will be able to see the food I gave you in the wilderness when I set you free from Egypt.” | 32Then Moses said, "This is what the LORD has commanded, 'Let an omerful of it be kept throughout your generations, that they may see the bread that I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.'" |
Moses said to Aaron, “Get a jar and fill it with two quarts of manna. Then put it in a sacred place before the LORD to preserve it for all future generations.” | 33Moses said to Aaron, "Take a jar and put an omerful of manna in it, and place it before the LORD to be kept throughout your generations." |
Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded Moses. He eventually placed it in the Ark of the Covenant—in front of the stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant. | 34As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the Testimony, to be kept. |
So the people of Israel ate manna for forty years until they arrived at the land where they would settle. They ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. | 35The sons of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. |
The container used to measure the manna was an omer, which was one-tenth of an ephah; it held about two quarts. | 36(Now an omer is a tenth of an ephah.) |
