Deuteronomy 18
NLT Parallel NASB [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationNew American Standard Bible 1995
“Remember that the Levitical priests—that is, the whole of the tribe of Levi—will receive no allotment of land among the other tribes in Israel. Instead, the priests and Levites will eat from the special gifts given to the LORD, for that is their share.1"The Levitical priests, the whole tribe of Levi, shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the LORD'S offerings by fire and His portion.
They will have no land of their own among the Israelites. The LORD himself is their special possession, just as he promised them.2"They shall have no inheritance among their countrymen; the LORD is their inheritance, as He promised them.
“These are the parts the priests may claim as their share from the cattle, sheep, and goats that the people bring as offerings: the shoulder, the cheeks, and the stomach.3"Now this shall be the priests' due from the people, from those who offer a sacrifice, either an ox or a sheep, of which they shall give to the priest the shoulder and the two cheeks and the stomach.
You must also give to the priests the first share of the grain, the new wine, the olive oil, and the wool at shearing time.4"You shall give him the first fruits of your grain, your new wine, and your oil, and the first shearing of your sheep.
For the LORD your God chose the tribe of Levi out of all your tribes to minister in the LORD’s name forever.5"For the LORD your God has chosen him and his sons from all your tribes, to stand and serve in the name of the LORD forever.
“Suppose a Levite chooses to move from his town in Israel, wherever he is living, to the place the LORD chooses for worship.6"Now if a Levite comes from any of your towns throughout Israel where he resides, and comes whenever he desires to the place which the LORD chooses,
He may minister there in the name of the LORD his God, just like all his fellow Levites who are serving the LORD there.7then he shall serve in the name of the LORD his God, like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD.
He may eat his share of the sacrifices and offerings, even if he also receives support from his family. A Call to Holy Living8"They shall eat equal portions, except what they receive from the sale of their fathers' estates.
“When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there.9"When you enter the land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable things of those nations.
For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft,10"There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,
or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead.11or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.
Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the LORD your God will drive them out ahead of you.12"For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD; and because of these detestable things the LORD your God will drive them out before you.
But you must be blameless before the LORD your God.13"You shall be blameless before the LORD your God.
The nations you are about to displace consult sorcerers and fortune-tellers, but the LORD your God forbids you to do such things.” True and False Prophets14"For those nations, which you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice witchcraft and to diviners, but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so.
Moses continued, “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.15"The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him.
For this is what you yourselves requested of the LORD your God when you were assembled at Mount Sinai. You said, ‘Don’t let us hear the voice of the LORD our God anymore or see this blazing fire, for we will die.’16"This is according to all that you asked of the LORD your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, saying, 'Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, let me not see this great fire anymore, or I will die.'
“Then the LORD said to me, ‘What they have said is right.17"The LORD said to me, 'They have spoken well.
I will raise up a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell the people everything I command him.18'I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.
I will personally deal with anyone who will not listen to the messages the prophet proclaims on my behalf.19It shall come about that whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him.
But any prophet who falsely claims to speak in my name or who speaks in the name of another god must die.’20'But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.'
“But you may wonder, ‘How will we know whether or not a prophecy is from the LORD?’21"You may say in your heart, 'How will we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?'
If the prophet speaks in the LORD’s name but his prediction does not happen or come true, you will know that the LORD did not give that message. That prophet has spoken without my authority and need not be feared.22"When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.
