While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and some of the Sadducees.1As they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them,
These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a resurrection of the dead.2being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
They arrested them and, since it was already evening, put them in jail until morning.3And they laid hands on them and put them in jail until the next day, for it was already evening.
But many of the people who heard their message believed it, so the number of men who believed now totaled about 5,000.4But many of those who had heard the message believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.
The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem.5On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem;
Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other relatives of the high priest.6and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent.
They brought in the two disciples and demanded, “By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?”7When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, "By what power, or in what name, have you done this?"
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of our people,8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers and elders of the people,
are we being questioned today because we’ve done a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want to know how he was healed?9if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well,
Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead.10let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead-- by this name this man stands here before you in good health.
For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’11"He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone.
There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”12"And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved."
The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.13Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus.
But since they could see the man who had been healed standing right there among them, there was nothing the council could say.14And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply.
So they ordered Peter and John out of the council chamber and conferred among themselves.15But when they had ordered them to leave the Council, they began to confer with one another,
“What should we do with these men?” they asked each other. “We can’t deny that they have performed a miraculous sign, and everybody in Jerusalem knows about it.16saying, "What shall we do with these men? For the fact that a noteworthy miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
But to keep them from spreading their propaganda any further, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in Jesus’ name again.”17"But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no longer to any man in this name."
So they called the apostles back in and commanded them never again to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.18And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John replied, “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him?19But Peter and John answered and said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge;
We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard.”20for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."
The council then threatened them further, but they finally let them go because they didn’t know how to punish them without starting a riot. For everyone was praising God21When they had threatened them further, they let them go (finding no basis on which to punish them) on account of the people, because they were all glorifying God for what had happened;
for this miraculous sign—the healing of a man who had been lame for more than forty years. The Believers Pray for Courage22for the man was more than forty years old on whom this miracle of healing had been performed.
As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said.23When they had been released, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God: “O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—24And when they heard this, they lifted their voices to God with one accord and said, "O Lord, it is You who MADE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA, AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM,
you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, ‘Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans?25who by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Your servant, said, 'WHY DID THE GENTILES RAGE, AND THE PEOPLES DEVISE FUTILE THINGS?
The kings of the earth prepared for battle; the rulers gathered together against the LORD and against his Messiah.’26'THE KINGS OF THE EARTH TOOK THEIR STAND, AND THE RULERS WERE GATHERED TOGETHER AGAINST THE LORD AND AGAINST HIS CHRIST.'
“In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed.27"For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,
But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will.28to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur.
And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word.29"And now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Your bond-servants may speak Your word with all confidence,
Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”30while You extend Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders take place through the name of Your holy servant Jesus."
After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. The Believers Share Their Possessions31And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.
All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had.32And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own, but all things were common property to them.
The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all.33And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was upon them all.
There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them34For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds of the sales
and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.35and lay them at the apostles' feet, and they would be distributed to each as any had need.
For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus.36Now Joseph, a Levite of Cyprian birth, who was also called Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means Son of Encouragement),
He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.37and who owned a tract of land, sold it and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet.
