While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and some of the Sadducees.1While they were speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple police, and the Sadducees confronted them,
These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a resurrection of the dead.2because they were annoyed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
They arrested them and, since it was already evening, put them in jail until morning.3So they seized them and took them into custody until the next day since it was already evening.
But many of the people who heard their message believed it, so the number of men who believed now totaled about 5,000.4But many of those who heard the message believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.
The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem.5The next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem
Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other relatives of the high priest.6with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all the members of the high-priestly family.
They brought in the two disciples and demanded, “By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?”7After they had Peter and John stand before them, they began to question them: "By what power or in what name have you done this?"
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of our people,8Then Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders:
are we being questioned today because we’ve done a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want to know how he was healed?9If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a disabled man, by what means he was healed,
Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead.10let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead--by him this man is standing here before you healthy.
For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’11This Jesus is the stone rejected by you builders, which has become the cornerstone.
There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”12There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved."
The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.13When they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed and recognized that they had been with Jesus.
But since they could see the man who had been healed standing right there among them, there was nothing the council could say.14And since they saw the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in opposition.
So they ordered Peter and John out of the council chamber and conferred among themselves.15After they ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin, they conferred among themselves,
“What should we do with these men?” they asked each other. “We can’t deny that they have performed a miraculous sign, and everybody in Jerusalem knows about it.16saying, "What should we do with these men? For an obvious sign has been done through them, clear to everyone living in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
But to keep them from spreading their propaganda any further, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in Jesus’ name again.”17But so that this does not spread any further among the people, let's threaten them against speaking to anyone in this name again."
So they called the apostles back in and commanded them never again to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.18So they called for them and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John replied, “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him?19Peter and John answered them, "Whether it's right in the sight of God for us to listen to you rather than to God, you decide;
We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard.”20for we are unable to stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."
The council then threatened them further, but they finally let them go because they didn’t know how to punish them without starting a riot. For everyone was praising God21After threatening them further, they released them. They found no way to punish them because the people were all giving glory to God over what had been done.
for this miraculous sign—the healing of a man who had been lame for more than forty years. The Believers Pray for Courage22For this sign of healing had been performed on a man over forty years old.
As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said.23After they were released, they went to their own people and reported everything the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God: “O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—24When they heard this, they raised their voices together to God and said, "Master, you are the one who made the heaven, the earth, and the sea, and everything in them.
you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying, ‘Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans?25You said through the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David your servant: Why do the Gentiles rage and the peoples plot futile things?
The kings of the earth prepared for battle; the rulers gathered together against the LORD and against his Messiah.’26The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers assemble together against the Lord and against his Messiah.
“In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed.27"For, in fact, in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed,
But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will.28to do whatever your hand and your will had predestined to take place.
And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word.29And now, Lord, consider their threats, and grant that your servants may speak your word with all boldness,
Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”30while you stretch out your hand for healing, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus."
After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness. The Believers Share Their Possessions31When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God boldly.
All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had.32Now the entire group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but instead they held everything in common.
The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all.33With great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on all of them.
There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them34For there was not a needy person among them because all those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the proceeds of what was sold,
and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.35and laid them at the apostles' feet. This was then distributed to each person as any had need.
For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus.36Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus by birth, the one the apostles called Barnabas (which is translated Son of Encouragement),
He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.37sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
