New King James Version | New International Version |
But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: | 1You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. |
that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; | 2Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. |
the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— | 3Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. |
that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, | 4Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, |
to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. | 5to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. |
Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, | 6Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. |
in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, | 7In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness |
sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you. | 8and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. |
Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, | 9Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, |
not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things. | 10and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive. |
For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, | 11For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. |
teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, | 12It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, |
looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, | 13while we wait for the blessed hope--the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, |
who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. | 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. |
Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you. | 15These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you. |
