New King James Version | New International Version |
“Judge not, that you be not judged. | 1"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. |
For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. | 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. |
And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? | 3"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? |
Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? | 4How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? |
Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. | 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. |
“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces. | 6"Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. |
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. | 7"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. |
For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. | 8For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. |
Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? | 9"Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? |
Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? | 10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? |
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! | 11If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! |
Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. | 12So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. |
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. | 13"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. |
Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. | 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. |
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. | 15"Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. |
You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? | 16By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? |
Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. | 17Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. |
A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. | 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. |
Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. | 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. |
Therefore by their fruits you will know them. | 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. |
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. | 21"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. |
Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ | 22Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' |
And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ | 23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' |
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: | 24"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. |
and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. | 25The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. |
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: | 26But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. |
and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” | 27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." |
And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, | 28When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, |
for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. | 29because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law. |
