New King James Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
“Judge not, that you be not judged. | 1"Do not judge, so that you won't be judged. |
For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. | 2For with the judgment you use, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. |
And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? | 3Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye but don't notice the log in your own eye? |
Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? | 4Or how can you say to your brother, Let me take the speck out of your eye,' and look, there's a log in your eye? |
Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. | 5Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. |
“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces. | 6Don't give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them with their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces. |
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. | 7"Keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you. |
For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. | 8For everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. |
Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? | 9What man among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? |
Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? | 10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? |
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! | 11If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! |
Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. | 12Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them--this is the Law and the Prophets. |
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. | 13"Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it. |
Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. | 14How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it. |
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. | 15"Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravaging wolves. |
You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? | 16You'll recognize them by their fruit. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes or figs from thistles? |
Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. | 17In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit. |
A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. | 18A good tree can't produce bad fruit; neither can a bad tree produce good fruit. |
Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. | 19Every tree that doesn't produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. |
Therefore by their fruits you will know them. | 20So you'll recognize them by their fruit. |
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. | 21"Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord!' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven. |
Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ | 22On that day many will say to Me, Lord, Lord, didn't we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name?' |
And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ | 23Then I will announce to them, I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers!' |
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: | 24"Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on the rock. |
and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. | 25The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn't collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. |
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: | 26But everyone who hears these words of Mine and doesn't act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. |
and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” | 27The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. And its collapse was great!" |
And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching, | 28When Jesus had finished this sermon, the crowds were astonished at His teaching, |
for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. | 29because He was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes. |
