| 1Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 1The LORD said to Moses, |
| 2“Speak to Aaron and his sons, that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, and that they do not profane My holy name by what they dedicate to Me: I am the LORD. | 2"Tell Aaron and his sons to treat with respect the sacred offerings the Israelites consecrate to me, so they will not profane my holy name. I am the LORD. |
| 3Say to them: ‘Whoever of all your descendants throughout your generations, who goes near the holy things which the children of Israel dedicate to the LORD, while he has uncleanness upon him, that person shall be cut off from My presence: I am the LORD. | 3"Say to them: 'For the generations to come, if any of your descendants is ceremonially unclean and yet comes near the sacred offerings that the Israelites consecrate to the LORD, that person must be cut off from my presence. I am the LORD. |
| 4‘Whatever man of the descendants of Aaron, who is a leper or has a discharge, shall not eat the holy offerings until he is clean. And whoever touches anything made unclean by a corpse, or a man who has had an emission of semen, | 4"'If a descendant of Aaron has a defiling skin disease or a bodily discharge, he may not eat the sacred offerings until he is cleansed. He will also be unclean if he touches something defiled by a corpse or by anyone who has an emission of semen, |
| 5or whoever touches any creeping thing by which he would be made unclean, or any person by whom he would become unclean, whatever his uncleanness may be— | 5or if he touches any crawling thing that makes him unclean, or any person who makes him unclean, whatever the uncleanness may be. |
| 6the person who has touched any such thing shall be unclean until evening, and shall not eat the holy offerings unless he washes his body with water. | 6The one who touches any such thing will be unclean till evening. He must not eat any of the sacred offerings unless he has bathed himself with water. |
| 7And when the sun goes down he shall be clean; and afterward he may eat the holy offerings, because it is his food. | 7When the sun goes down, he will be clean, and after that he may eat the sacred offerings, for they are his food. |
| 8Whatever dies naturally or is torn by beasts he shall not eat, to defile himself with it: I am the LORD. | 8He must not eat anything found dead or torn by wild animals, and so become unclean through it. I am the LORD. |
| 9‘They shall therefore keep My ordinance, lest they bear sin for it and die thereby, if they profane it: I the LORD sanctify them. | 9"'The priests are to perform my service in such a way that they do not become guilty and die for treating it with contempt. I am the LORD, who makes them holy. |
| 10‘No outsider shall eat the holy offering; one who dwells with the priest, or a hired servant, shall not eat the holy thing. | 10"'No one outside a priest's family may eat the sacred offering, nor may the guest of a priest or his hired worker eat it. |
| 11But if the priest buys a person with his money, he may eat it; and one who is born in his house may eat his food. | 11But if a priest buys a slave with money, or if slaves are born in his household, they may eat his food. |
| 12If the priest’s daughter is married to an outsider, she may not eat of the holy offerings. | 12If a priest's daughter marries anyone other than a priest, she may not eat any of the sacred contributions. |
| 13But if the priest’s daughter is a widow or divorced, and has no child, and has returned to her father’s house as in her youth, she may eat her father’s food; but no outsider shall eat it. | 13But if a priest's daughter becomes a widow or is divorced, yet has no children, and she returns to live in her father's household as in her youth, she may eat her father's food. No unauthorized person, however, may eat it. |
| 14‘And if a man eats the holy offering unintentionally, then he shall restore a holy offering to the priest, and add one-fifth to it. | 14"'Anyone who eats a sacred offering by mistake must make restitution to the priest for the offering and add a fifth of the value to it. |
| 15They shall not profane the holy offerings of the children of Israel, which they offer to the LORD, | 15The priests must not desecrate the sacred offerings the Israelites present to the LORD |
| 16or allow them to bear the guilt of trespass when they eat their holy offerings; for I the LORD sanctify them.’ ” | 16by allowing them to eat the sacred offerings and so bring upon them guilt requiring payment. I am the LORD, who makes them holy.'" |
| 17And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 17The LORD said to Moses, |
| 18“Speak to Aaron and his sons, and to all the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘Whatever man of the house of Israel, or of the strangers in Israel, who offers his sacrifice for any of his vows or for any of his freewill offerings, which they offer to the LORD as a burnt offering— | 18"Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites and say to them: 'If any of you--whether an Israelite or a foreigner residing in Israel--presents a gift for a burnt offering to the LORD, either to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering, |
| 19you shall offer of your own free will a male without blemish from the cattle, from the sheep, or from the goats. | 19you must present a male without defect from the cattle, sheep or goats in order that it may be accepted on your behalf. |
| 20Whatever has a defect, you shall not offer, for it shall not be acceptable on your behalf. | 20Do not bring anything with a defect, because it will not be accepted on your behalf. |
| 21And whoever offers a sacrifice of a peace offering to the LORD, to fulfill his vow, or a freewill offering from the cattle or the sheep, it must be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no defect in it. | 21When anyone brings from the herd or flock a fellowship offering to the LORD to fulfill a special vow or as a freewill offering, it must be without defect or blemish to be acceptable. |
| 22Those that are blind or broken or maimed, or have an ulcer or eczema or scabs, you shall not offer to the LORD, nor make an offering by fire of them on the altar to the LORD. | 22Do not offer to the LORD the blind, the injured or the maimed, or anything with warts or festering or running sores. Do not place any of these on the altar as a food offering presented to the LORD. |
| 23Either a bull or a lamb that has any limb too long or too short you may offer as a freewill offering, but for a vow it shall not be accepted. | 23You may, however, present as a freewill offering an ox or a sheep that is deformed or stunted, but it will not be accepted in fulfillment of a vow. |
| 24‘You shall not offer to the LORD what is bruised or crushed, or torn or cut; nor shall you make any offering of them in your land. | 24You must not offer to the LORD an animal whose testicles are bruised, crushed, torn or cut. You must not do this in your own land, |
| 25Nor from a foreigner’s hand shall you offer any of these as the bread of your God, because their corruption is in them, and defects are in them. They shall not be accepted on your behalf.’ ” | 25and you must not accept such animals from the hand of a foreigner and offer them as the food of your God. They will not be accepted on your behalf, because they are deformed and have defects.'" |
| 26And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: | 26The LORD said to Moses, |
| 27“When a bull or a sheep or a goat is born, it shall be seven days with its mother; and from the eighth day and thereafter it shall be accepted as an offering made by fire to the LORD. | 27"When a calf, a lamb or a goat is born, it is to remain with its mother for seven days. From the eighth day on, it will be acceptable as a food offering presented to the LORD. |
| 28Whether it is a cow or ewe, do not kill both her and her young on the same day. | 28Do not slaughter a cow or a sheep and its young on the same day. |
| 29And when you offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the LORD, offer it of your own free will. | 29"When you sacrifice a thank offering to the LORD, sacrifice it in such a way that it will be accepted on your behalf. |
| 30On the same day it shall be eaten; you shall leave none of it until morning: I am the LORD. | 30It must be eaten that same day; leave none of it till morning. I am the LORD. |
| 31“Therefore you shall keep My commandments, and perform them: I am the LORD. | 31"Keep my commands and follow them. I am the LORD. |
| 32You shall not profane My holy name, but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel. I am the LORD who sanctifies you, | 32Do not profane my holy name, for I must be acknowledged as holy by the Israelites. I am the LORD, who made you holy |
| 33who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD.” | 33and who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD." |
