Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said:1Then Bildad the Shuhite answered:
“How long till you put an end to words? Gain understanding, and afterward we will speak.2"How long until you make an end of words? You must consider, and then we can talk.
Why are we counted as beasts, And regarded as stupid in your sight?3Why should we be regarded as beasts, and considered stupid in your sight?
You who tear yourself in anger, Shall the earth be forsaken for you? Or shall the rock be removed from its place?4You who tear yourself to pieces in your anger, will the earth be abandoned for your sake? Or will a rock be moved from its place?
“The light of the wicked indeed goes out, And the flame of his fire does not shine.5"Yes, the lamp of the wicked is extinguished; his flame of fire does not shine.
The light is dark in his tent, And his lamp beside him is put out.6The light in his tent grows dark; his lamp above him is extinguished.
The steps of his strength are shortened, And his own counsel casts him down.7His vigorous steps are restricted, and his own counsel throws him down.
For he is cast into a net by his own feet, And he walks into a snare.8For he has been thrown into a net by his feet and he wanders into a mesh.
The net takes him by the heel, And a snare lays hold of him.9A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare grips him.
A noose is hidden for him on the ground, And a trap for him in the road.10A rope is hidden for him on the ground and a trap for him lies on the path.
Terrors frighten him on every side, And drive him to his feet.11Terrors frighten him on all sides and dog his every step.
His strength is starved, And destruction is ready at his side.12Calamity is hungry for him, and misfortune is ready at his side.
It devours patches of his skin; The firstborn of death devours his limbs.13It eats away parts of his skin; the most terrible death devours his limbs.
He is uprooted from the shelter of his tent, And they parade him before the king of terrors.14He is dragged from the security of his tent, and marched off to the king of terrors.
They dwell in his tent who are none of his; Brimstone is scattered on his dwelling.15Fire resides in his tent; over his residence burning sulfur is scattered.
His roots are dried out below, And his branch withers above.16Below his roots dry up, and his branches wither above.
The memory of him perishes from the earth, And he has no name among the renowned.17His memory perishes from the earth, he has no name in the land.
He is driven from light into darkness, And chased out of the world.18He is driven from light into darkness and is banished from the world.
He has neither son nor posterity among his people, Nor any remaining in his dwellings.19He has neither children nor descendants among his people, no survivor in those places he once stayed.
Those in the west are astonished at his day, As those in the east are frightened.20People of the west are appalled at his fate; people of the east are seized with horror, saying,
Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, And this is the place of him who does not know God.”21Surely such is the residence of an evil man; and this is the place of one who has not known God.'"
