New King James Version | Berean Study Bible |
Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said: | 1Then Bildad the Shuhite replied: |
“How long till you put an end to words? Gain understanding, and afterward we will speak. | 2“How long until you end these speeches? Show some sense, and then we can talk. |
Why are we counted as beasts, And regarded as stupid in your sight? | 3Why are we regarded as cattle, as stupid in your sight? |
You who tear yourself in anger, Shall the earth be forsaken for you? Or shall the rock be removed from its place? | 4You who tear yourself in anger—should the earth be forsaken on your account, or the rocks be moved from their place? |
“The light of the wicked indeed goes out, And the flame of his fire does not shine. | 5Indeed, the lamp of the wicked is extinguished; the flame of his fire does not glow. |
The light is dark in his tent, And his lamp beside him is put out. | 6The light in his tent grows dark, and the lamp beside him goes out. |
The steps of his strength are shortened, And his own counsel casts him down. | 7His vigorous stride is shortened, and his own schemes trip him up. |
For he is cast into a net by his own feet, And he walks into a snare. | 8For his own feet lead him into a net, and he wanders into its mesh. |
The net takes him by the heel, And a snare lays hold of him. | 9A trap seizes his heel; a snare grips him. |
A noose is hidden for him on the ground, And a trap for him in the road. | 10A noose is hidden in the ground, and a trap lies in his path. |
Terrors frighten him on every side, And drive him to his feet. | 11Terrors frighten him on every side and harass his every step. |
His strength is starved, And destruction is ready at his side. | 12His strength is depleted, and calamity is ready at his side. |
It devours patches of his skin; The firstborn of death devours his limbs. | 13It devours patches of his skin; the firstborn of death devours his limbs. |
He is uprooted from the shelter of his tent, And they parade him before the king of terrors. | 14He is torn from the shelter of his tent and is marched off to the king of terrors. |
They dwell in his tent who are none of his; Brimstone is scattered on his dwelling. | 15Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur rains down on his dwelling. |
His roots are dried out below, And his branch withers above. | 16The roots beneath him dry up, and the branches above him wither away. |
The memory of him perishes from the earth, And he has no name among the renowned. | 17The memory of him perishes from the earth, and he has no name in the land. |
He is driven from light into darkness, And chased out of the world. | 18He is driven from light into darkness and is chased from the inhabited world. |
He has neither son nor posterity among his people, Nor any remaining in his dwellings. | 19He has no offspring or posterity among his people, no survivor where he once lived. |
Those in the west are astonished at his day, As those in the east are frightened. | 20Those in the west are appalled at his fate, while those in the east tremble in horror. |
Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, And this is the place of him who does not know God.” | 21Surely such is the dwelling of the wicked and the place of one who does not know God.” |
