New King James VersionEnglish Standard Version
Better is the poor who walks in his integrity Than one who is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.1Better is a poor person who walks in his integrity than one who is crooked in speech and is a fool.
Also it is not good for a soul to be without knowledge, And he sins who hastens with his feet.2Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.
The foolishness of a man twists his way, And his heart frets against the LORD.3When a man’s folly brings his way to ruin, his heart rages against the LORD.
Wealth makes many friends, But the poor is separated from his friend.4Wealth brings many new friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend.
A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who speaks lies will not escape.5A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will not escape.
Many entreat the favor of the nobility, And every man is a friend to one who gives gifts.6Many seek the favor of a generous man, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.
All the brothers of the poor hate him; How much more do his friends go far from him! He may pursue them with words, yet they abandon him.7All a poor man’s brothers hate him; how much more do his friends go far from him! He pursues them with words, but does not have them.
He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; He who keeps understanding will find good.8Whoever gets sense loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will discover good.
A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who speaks lies shall perish.9A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish.
Luxury is not fitting for a fool, Much less for a servant to rule over princes.10It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury, much less for a slave to rule over princes.
The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, And his glory is to overlook a transgression.11Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.
The king’s wrath is like the roaring of a lion, But his favor is like dew on the grass.12A king’s wrath is like the growling of a lion, but his favor is like dew on the grass.
A foolish son is the ruin of his father, And the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.13A foolish son is ruin to his father, and a wife’s quarreling is a continual dripping of rain.
