Romans 6
NIV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
New International VersionNew Living Translation
What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?1Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace?
By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?2Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?
Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?3Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death?
We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.4For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.5Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was.
For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin--6We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.
because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.7For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.8And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him.
For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.9We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him.
The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.10When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God.
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.11So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.12Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires.
Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.13Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.
For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.14Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means!15Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not!
Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?16Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.
But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.17Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you.
You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.18Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.
I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness.19Because of the weakness of your human nature, I am using the illustration of slavery to help you understand all this. Previously, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now you must give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become holy.
When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.20When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right.
What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!21And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom.
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.22But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
