Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. | 1Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession; |
He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God's house. | 2He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was in all His house. |
Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. | 3For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. |
For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. | 4For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. |
"Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house," bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. | 5Now Moses was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken later; |
But Christ is faithful as the Son over God's house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory. | 6but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house-- whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end. |
So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice, | 7Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, |
do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness, | 8DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME, AS IN THE DAY OF TRIAL IN THE WILDERNESS, |
where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did. | 9WHERE YOUR FATHERS TRIED Me BY TESTING Me, AND SAW MY WORKS FOR FORTY YEARS. |
That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.' | 10"THEREFORE I WAS ANGRY WITH THIS GENERATION, AND SAID, 'THEY ALWAYS GO ASTRAY IN THEIR HEART, AND THEY DID NOT KNOW MY WAYS'; |
So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'" | 11AS I SWORE IN MY WRATH, 'THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST.'" |
See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. | 12Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. |
But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called "Today," so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. | 13But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. |
We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end. | 14For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end, |
As has just been said: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion." | 15while it is said, "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS, AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME." |
Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? | 16For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? |
And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness? | 17And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? |
And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed? | 18And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? |
So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief. | 19So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief. |
