Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. | 1Therefore, holy brothers, partners in a heavenly calling, keep your focus on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession. |
He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God's house. | 2He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was in all God's household, |
Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. | 3because he is worthy of greater glory than Moses in the same way that the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. |
For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. | 4After all, every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. |
"Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house," bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. | 5Moses was faithful in all God's household as a servant who was to testify to what would be said later, |
But Christ is faithful as the Son over God's house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory. | 6but the Messiah was faithful as the Son in charge of God's household, and we are his household if we hold on to our courage and the hope in which we rejoice. |
So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice, | 7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, "Today, if you hear his voice, |
do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness, | 8do not harden your hearts as they did when they provoked me during the time of testing in the wilderness. |
where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did. | 9There your ancestors tested me, even though they had seen my actions |
That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.' | 10for 40 years. That is why I was indignant with that generation and said, 'They are always going astray in their hearts, and they have not known my ways.' |
So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'" | 11So in my anger I swore a solemn oath that they would never enter my rest." |
See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. | 12See to it, my brothers, that no evil, unbelieving heart is found in any of you, as shown by your turning away from the living God. |
But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called "Today," so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. | 13Instead, continue to encourage one another every day, as long as it is called "Today," so that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin, |
We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end. | 14because we are the Messiah's partners only if we hold on to our original confidence to the end. |
As has just been said: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion." | 15As it is said, "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as they did when they provoked me." |
Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? | 16Now who heard him and provoked him? Was it not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? |
And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness? | 17And with whom was he angry for 40 years? Was it not with those who sinned and whose bodies fell dead in the wilderness? |
And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed? | 18And to whom did he swear that they would never enter his rest? It was to those who disobeyed him, was it not? |
So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief. | 19So we see that they were unable to enter because of their unbelief. |
