Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. | 1Therefore, holy brothers and companions in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession; |
He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God's house. | 2He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses was in all God's household. |
Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. | 3For Jesus is considered worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder has more honor than the house. |
For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. | 4Now every house is built by someone, but the One who built everything is God. |
"Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house," bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. | 5Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's household, as a testimony to what would be said in the future. |
But Christ is faithful as the Son over God's house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory. | 6But Christ was faithful as a Son over His household. And we are that household if we hold on to the courage and the confidence of our hope. |
So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice, | 7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: Today, if you hear His voice, |
do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness, | 8do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, |
where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did. | 9where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, and saw My works |
That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, 'Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.' | 10for 40 years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation and said, "They always go astray in their hearts, and they have not known My ways." |
So I declared on oath in my anger, 'They shall never enter my rest.'" | 11So I swore in My anger, "They will not enter My rest." |
See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. | 12Watch out, brothers, so that there won't be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that departs from the living God. |
But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called "Today," so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. | 13But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin's deception. |
We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end. | 14For we have become companions of the Messiah if we hold firmly until the end the reality that we had at the start. |
As has just been said: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion." | 15As it is said: Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion. |
Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? | 16For who heard and rebelled? Wasn't it really all who came out of Egypt under Moses? |
And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness? | 17And who was He provoked with for 40 years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? |
And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed? | 18And who did He swear to that they would not enter His rest, if not those who disobeyed? |
So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief. | 19So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. |
