These are the terms of the covenant the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb. | 1These are the words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He had made with them at Horeb. |
Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land. | 2And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "You have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and all his servants and all his land; |
With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those signs and great wonders. | 3the great trials which your eyes have seen, those great signs and wonders. |
But to this day the LORD has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear. | 4"Yet to this day the LORD has not given you a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear. |
Yet the LORD says, "During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet. | 5"I have led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandal has not worn out on your foot. |
You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink. I did this so that you might know that I am the LORD your God." | 6"You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or strong drink, in order that you might know that I am the LORD your God. |
When you reached this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to fight against us, but we defeated them. | 7"When you reached this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan came out to meet us for battle, but we defeated them; |
We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh. | 8and we took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites. |
Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do. | 9"So keep the words of this covenant to do them, that you may prosper in all that you do. |
All of you are standing today in the presence of the LORD your God--your leaders and chief men, your elders and officials, and all the other men of Israel, | 10"You stand today, all of you, before the LORD your God: your chiefs, your tribes, your elders and your officers, even all the men of Israel, |
together with your children and your wives, and the foreigners living in your camps who chop your wood and carry your water. | 11your little ones, your wives, and the alien who is within your camps, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water, |
You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the LORD your God, a covenant the LORD is making with you this day and sealing with an oath, | 12that you may enter into the covenant with the LORD your God, and into His oath which the LORD your God is making with you today, |
to confirm you this day as his people, that he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. | 13in order that He may establish you today as His people and that He may be your God, just as He spoke to you and as He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. |
I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you | 14"Now not with you alone am I making this covenant and this oath, |
who are standing here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God but also with those who are not here today. | 15but both with those who stand here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God and with those who are not with us here today |
You yourselves know how we lived in Egypt and how we passed through the countries on the way here. | 16(for you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you passed; |
You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold. | 17moreover, you have seen their abominations and their idols of wood, stone, silver, and gold, which they had with them); |
Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison. | 18so that there will not be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of those nations; that there will not be among you a root bearing poisonous fruit and wormwood. |
When such a person hears the words of this oath and they invoke a blessing on themselves, thinking, "I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way," they will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry. | 19"It shall be when he hears the words of this curse, that he will boast, saying, 'I have peace though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart in order to destroy the watered land with the dry.' |
The LORD will never be willing to forgive them; his wrath and zeal will burn against them. All the curses written in this book will fall on them, and the LORD will blot out their names from under heaven. | 20"The LORD shall never be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the LORD and His jealousy will burn against that man, and every curse which is written in this book will rest on him, and the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven. |
The LORD will single them out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law. | 21"Then the LORD will single him out for adversity from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant which are written in this book of the law. |
Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the LORD has afflicted it. | 22"Now the generation to come, your sons who rise up after you and the foreigner who comes from a distant land, when they see the plagues of the land and the diseases with which the LORD has afflicted it, will say, |
The whole land will be a burning waste of salt and sulfur--nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim, which the LORD overthrew in fierce anger. | 23'All its land is brimstone and salt, a burning waste, unsown and unproductive, and no grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger and in His wrath.' |
All the nations will ask: "Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why this fierce, burning anger?" | 24"All the nations will say, 'Why has the LORD done thus to this land? Why this great outburst of anger?' |
And the answer will be: "It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt. | 25"Then men will say, 'Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. |
They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them. | 26'They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods whom they have not known and whom He had not allotted to them. |
Therefore the LORD's anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book. | 27'Therefore, the anger of the LORD burned against that land, to bring upon it every curse which is written in this book; |
In furious anger and in great wrath the LORD uprooted them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now." | 28and the LORD uprooted them from their land in anger and in fury and in great wrath, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.' |
The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law. | 29"The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law. |
