New International Version | King James Bible |
After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. | 1After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth; |
There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, | 2And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them. |
and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them. | 3And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers. |
Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks. | 4And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. |
When Silas and Timothy came from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself exclusively to preaching, testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah. | 5And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ. |
But when they opposed Paul and became abusive, he shook out his clothes in protest and said to them, "Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent of it. From now on I will go to the Gentiles." | 6And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles. |
Then Paul left the synagogue and went next door to the house of Titius Justus, a worshiper of God. | 7And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue. |
Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his entire household believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthians who heard Paul believed and were baptized. | 8And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. |
One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: "Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. | 9Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: |
For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city." | 10For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city. |
So Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and a half, teaching them the word of God. | 11And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them. |
While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews of Corinth made a united attack on Paul and brought him to the place of judgment. | 12And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment seat, |
"This man," they charged, "is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law." | 13Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law. |
Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to them, "If you Jews were making a complaint about some misdemeanor or serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to listen to you. | 14And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you: |
But since it involves questions about words and names and your own law--settle the matter yourselves. I will not be a judge of such things." | 15But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters. |
So he drove them off. | 16And he drave them from the judgment seat. |
Then the crowd there turned on Sosthenes the synagogue leader and beat him in front of the proconsul; and Gallio showed no concern whatever. | 17Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things. |
Paul stayed on in Corinth for some time. Then he left the brothers and sisters and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. Before he sailed, he had his hair cut off at Cenchreae because of a vow he had taken. | 18And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow. |
They arrived at Ephesus, where Paul left Priscilla and Aquila. He himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. | 19And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews. |
When they asked him to spend more time with them, he declined. | 20When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not; |
But as he left, he promised, "I will come back if it is God's will." Then he set sail from Ephesus. | 21But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus. |
When he landed at Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem and greeted the church and then went down to Antioch. | 22And when he had landed at Caesarea, and gone up, and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch. |
After spending some time in Antioch, Paul set out from there and traveled from place to place throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples. | 23And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples. |
Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. | 24And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. |
He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. | 25This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. |
He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately. | 26And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly. |
When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers and sisters encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. | 27And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: |
For he vigorously refuted his Jewish opponents in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Messiah. | 28For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ. |
