Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. | 1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! |
Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story-- those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble |
those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. | 3and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. |
Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. | 4Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; |
They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. | 5hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. | 6Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. | 7He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, | 8Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! |
for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. | 9For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. |
Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains, | 10Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, |
because they rebelled against God's commands and despised the plans of the Most High. | 11for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. |
So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. | 12So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. |
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 13Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains. | 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, | 15Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! |
for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron. | 16For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron. |
Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. | 17Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; |
They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death. | 18they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. |
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 19Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. | 20He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. | 21Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! |
Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy. | 22And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy! |
Some went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. | 23Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; |
They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep. | 24they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep. |
For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. | 25For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. |
They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. | 26They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; |
They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits' end. | 27they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end. |
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. | 28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. | 29He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. |
They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. | 30Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. |
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. | 31Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! |
Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders. | 32Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. |
He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground, | 33He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, |
and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there. | 34a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants. |
He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; | 35He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. |
there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle. | 36And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; |
They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; | 37they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield. |
he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish. | 38By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish. |
Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow; | 39When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow, |
he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste. | 40he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; |
But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks. | 41but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. |
The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths. | 42The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. |
Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the LORD. | 43Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD. |
