At this also my heart pounds and leaps from its place. | 1"At this also my heart trembles, And leaps from its place. |
Listen carefully to the thunder of his voice, to the rumbling that proceeds from his mouth. | 2"Listen closely to the thunder of His voice, And the rumbling that goes out from His mouth. |
Under the whole heaven he lets it go, even his lightning to the far corners of the earth. | 3"Under the whole heaven He lets it loose, And His lightning to the ends of the earth. |
After that a voice roars; he thunders with an exalted voice, and he does not hold back his lightning bolts when his voice is heard. | 4"After it, a voice roars; He thunders with His majestic voice, And He does not restrain the lightnings when His voice is heard. |
God thunders with his voice in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. | 5"God thunders with His voice wondrously, Doing great things which we cannot comprehend. |
For to the snow he says, 'Fall to earth,' and to the torrential rains, 'Pour down.' | 6"For to the snow He says, 'Fall on the earth,' And to the downpour and the rain, 'Be strong.' |
He causes everyone to stop working, so that all people may know his work. | 7"He seals the hand of every man, That all men may know His work. |
The wild animals go to their lairs, and in their dens they remain. | 8"Then the beast goes into its lair And remains in its den. |
A tempest blows out from its chamber, icy cold from the driving winds. | 9"Out of the south comes the storm, And out of the north the cold. |
The breath of God produces ice, and the breadth of the waters freeze solid. | 10"From the breath of God ice is made, And the expanse of the waters is frozen. |
He loads the clouds with moisture; he scatters his lightning through the clouds. | 11"Also with moisture He loads the thick cloud; He disperses the cloud of His lightning. |
The clouds go round in circles, wheeling about according to his plans, to carry out all that he commands them over the face of the whole inhabited world. | 12"It changes direction, turning around by His guidance, That it may do whatever He commands it On the face of the inhabited earth. |
Whether it is for punishment for his land, or whether it is for mercy, he causes it to find its mark. | 13"Whether for correction, or for His world, Or for lovingkindness, He causes it to happen. |
"Pay attention to this, Job! Stand still and consider the wonders God works. | 14"Listen to this, O Job, Stand and consider the wonders of God. |
Do you know how God commands them, how he makes lightning flash in his storm cloud? | 15"Do you know how God establishes them, And makes the lightning of His cloud to shine? |
Do you know about the balancing of the clouds, that wondrous activity of him who is perfect in knowledge? | 16"Do you know about the layers of the thick clouds, The wonders of one perfect in knowledge, |
You, whose garments are hot when the earth is still because of the south wind, | 17You whose garments are hot, When the land is still because of the south wind? |
will you, with him, spread out the clouds, solid as a mirror of molten metal? | 18"Can you, with Him, spread out the skies, Strong as a molten mirror? |
Tell us what we should say to him. We cannot prepare a case because of the darkness. | 19"Teach us what we shall say to Him; We cannot arrange our case because of darkness. |
Should he be informed that I want to speak? If a man speaks, surely he would be swallowed up! | 20"Shall it be told Him that I would speak? Or should a man say that he would be swallowed up? |
But now, the sun cannot be looked at--it is bright in the skies--after a wind passed and swept the clouds away. | 21"Now men do not see the light which is bright in the skies; But the wind has passed and cleared them. |
From the north he comes in golden splendor; around God is awesome majesty. | 22"Out of the north comes golden splendor; Around God is awesome majesty. |
As for the Almighty, we cannot attain to him! He is great in power, but justice and abundant righteousness he does not oppress. | 23"The Almighty-- we cannot find Him; He is exalted in power And He will not do violence to justice and abundant righteousness. |
Therefore people fear him, for he does not regard all the wise in heart." | 24"Therefore men fear Him; He does not regard any who are wise of heart." |
