Listen carefully to the thunder of his voice, to the rumbling that proceeds from his mouth. | 2Listen! Listen to the roar of his voice, to the rumbling that comes from his mouth. |
Under the whole heaven he lets it go, even his lightning to the far corners of the earth. | 3He unleashes his lightning beneath the whole heaven and sends it to the ends of the earth. |
After that a voice roars; he thunders with an exalted voice, and he does not hold back his lightning bolts when his voice is heard. | 4After that comes the sound of his roar; he thunders with his majestic voice. When his voice resounds, he holds nothing back. |
God thunders with his voice in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. | 5God's voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. |
For to the snow he says, 'Fall to earth,' and to the torrential rains, 'Pour down.' | 6He says to the snow, 'Fall on the earth,' and to the rain shower, 'Be a mighty downpour.' |
He causes everyone to stop working, so that all people may know his work. | 7So that everyone he has made may know his work, he stops all people from their labor. |
The wild animals go to their lairs, and in their dens they remain. | 8The animals take cover; they remain in their dens. |
A tempest blows out from its chamber, icy cold from the driving winds. | 9The tempest comes out from its chamber, the cold from the driving winds. |
The breath of God produces ice, and the breadth of the waters freeze solid. | 10The breath of God produces ice, and the broad waters become frozen. |

The clouds go round in circles, wheeling about according to his plans, to carry out all that he commands them over the face of the whole inhabited world. | 12At his direction they swirl around over the face of the whole earth to do whatever he commands them. |
Whether it is for punishment for his land, or whether it is for mercy, he causes it to find its mark. | 13He brings the clouds to punish people, or to water his earth and show his love. |
"Pay attention to this, Job! Stand still and consider the wonders God works. | 14"Listen to this, Job; stop and consider God's wonders. |
Do you know how God commands them, how he makes lightning flash in his storm cloud? | 15Do you know how God controls the clouds and makes his lightning flash? |
Do you know about the balancing of the clouds, that wondrous activity of him who is perfect in knowledge? | 16Do you know how the clouds hang poised, those wonders of him who has perfect knowledge? |
You, whose garments are hot when the earth is still because of the south wind, | 17You who swelter in your clothes when the land lies hushed under the south wind, |
will you, with him, spread out the clouds, solid as a mirror of molten metal? | 18can you join him in spreading out the skies, hard as a mirror of cast bronze? |
Tell us what we should say to him. We cannot prepare a case because of the darkness. | 19"Tell us what we should say to him; we cannot draw up our case because of our darkness. |
Should he be informed that I want to speak? If a man speaks, surely he would be swallowed up! | 20Should he be told that I want to speak? Would anyone ask to be swallowed up? |
But now, the sun cannot be looked at--it is bright in the skies--after a wind passed and swept the clouds away. | 21Now no one can look at the sun, bright as it is in the skies after the wind has swept them clean. |
From the north he comes in golden splendor; around God is awesome majesty. | 22Out of the north he comes in golden splendor; God comes in awesome majesty. |
As for the Almighty, we cannot attain to him! He is great in power, but justice and abundant righteousness he does not oppress. | 23The Almighty is beyond our reach and exalted in power; in his justice and great righteousness, he does not oppress. |
Therefore people fear him, for he does not regard all the wise in heart." | 24Therefore, people revere him, for does he not have regard for all the wise in heart?" |
