Job 37
1. God is to be feared because of his great works
15. His wisdom is unsearchable in them

At this
This phrase refers to the preceding discourse by Elihu, who is speaking about the majesty and power of God as displayed in nature. Elihu's speech is a continuation of the theme of God's sovereignty and wisdom, which is a central theme in the Book of Job. The context is a response to Job's questioning of God's justice and the suffering he endures.

my heart also pounds
The imagery of a pounding heart suggests a visceral, emotional reaction to the awe-inspiring power of God. This reflects a common biblical theme where encounters with God's majesty provoke a physical response, as seen in other scriptures like Isaiah 6:5, where Isaiah reacts to his vision of God. It underscores the human response to divine revelation and the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10).

and leaps from its place
This phrase emphasizes the intensity of Elihu's reaction, suggesting a sense of overwhelming awe and reverence. The heart "leaping" can be seen as a metaphor for the soul's response to God's presence, similar to the joy and fear experienced by those who witness God's works. This can be connected to the New Testament, where encounters with Jesus often led to profound emotional and spiritual responses, such as the disciples' reactions to His miracles.

Persons / Places / Events
1. Job
The central figure of the Book of Job, a man of great faith and patience who endures immense suffering and seeks understanding of God's ways.

2. Elihu
A young man who speaks to Job and his friends, offering a perspective on God's majesty and justice. Job 37 is part of Elihu's discourse.

3. The Whirlwind
Although not directly mentioned in this verse, the whirlwind is significant in the context of Job, as God later speaks to Job out of the whirlwind, symbolizing His power and presence.
Teaching Points
The Majesty of God
Elihu's words remind us of the overwhelming majesty and power of God. Our response should be one of reverence and awe, recognizing our own limitations in understanding His ways.

The Fear of the Lord
The pounding heart symbolizes a deep, reverential fear of the Lord. This fear is not terror but a profound respect and acknowledgment of God's sovereignty and holiness.

God's Sovereignty in Nature
The natural world reflects God's power and order. Observing creation can lead us to a greater appreciation of God's control over all things, encouraging trust in His plans.

Listening to God's Voice
Just as Elihu speaks to Job, we must be attentive to God's voice in our lives, whether through Scripture, prayer, or the counsel of others, seeking His wisdom and guidance.

Responding to God's Revelation
Our hearts should be moved by God's revelation, prompting us to worship, obedience, and a deeper relationship with Him.XXXVII.

(1) At this also my heart trembleth.--Elihu is discoursing of the same matter. He says, "Not only are the cattle terrified, but at this also my heart trembleth and is moved out of its place. Hark! listen to the sound of His voice."

Verses 1-24. - It has been already remarked that there is no natural division between ch. 36 and ch. 37. - the description of the thunderstorm and its effects runs on. From its effect on cattle, Elihu passes to its effect on man (vers. 1-5); and thence goes on to speak of other natural manifestations of God's power and marvellousness - snow, violent rain, whirlwind, frost, and the like (vers. 6-13). He then makes a final appeal to Job to acknowledge his own weakness and God's perfection and unsearchableness, and to bow down in wonder and adoration before him (vers. 14-24). Verse 1. - At this also; i.e. at the thunderstorm or at the particular crash mentioned in Job 36:33. My heart trembleth. A violent peal of thunder produces in almost all men a certain amount of nervous trepidation. Elihu seems to have been abnormally sensitive. His heart trembled so that it seemed to be moved out of his place.
