At this also my heart pounds and leaps from its place. | 1“At this my heart also pounds and leaps from its place. |
Listen carefully to the thunder of his voice, to the rumbling that proceeds from his mouth. | 2Listen closely to the thunder of His voice and the rumbling that comes from His mouth. |
Under the whole heaven he lets it go, even his lightning to the far corners of the earth. | 3He unleashes His lightning beneath the whole sky and sends it to the ends of the earth. |
After that a voice roars; he thunders with an exalted voice, and he does not hold back his lightning bolts when his voice is heard. | 4Then there comes a roaring sound; He thunders with His majestic voice. He does not restrain the lightning when His voice resounds. |
God thunders with his voice in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. | 5God thunders wondrously with His voice; He does great things we cannot comprehend. |
For to the snow he says, 'Fall to earth,' and to the torrential rains, 'Pour down.' | 6For He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the gentle rain, ‘Pour out a mighty downpour.’ |
He causes everyone to stop working, so that all people may know his work. | 7He seals up the hand of every man, so that all men may know His work. |
The wild animals go to their lairs, and in their dens they remain. | 8The wild animals enter their lairs; they settle down in their dens. |
A tempest blows out from its chamber, icy cold from the driving winds. | 9The tempest comes from its chamber, and the cold from the driving north winds. |
The breath of God produces ice, and the breadth of the waters freeze solid. | 10By the breath of God the ice is formed and the watery expanses are frozen. |
He loads the clouds with moisture; he scatters his lightning through the clouds. | 11He loads the clouds with moisture; He scatters His lightning through them. |
The clouds go round in circles, wheeling about according to his plans, to carry out all that he commands them over the face of the whole inhabited world. | 12They swirl about, whirling at His direction, accomplishing all that He commands over the face of all the earth. |
Whether it is for punishment for his land, or whether it is for mercy, he causes it to find its mark. | 13Whether for punishment or for His land, He accomplishes this in His loving devotion. |
"Pay attention to this, Job! Stand still and consider the wonders God works. | 14Listen to this, O Job; stand still and consider the wonders of God. |
Do you know how God commands them, how he makes lightning flash in his storm cloud? | 15Do you know how God dispatches the clouds or makes the lightning flash? |
Do you know about the balancing of the clouds, that wondrous activity of him who is perfect in knowledge? | 16Do you understand how the clouds float, those wonders of Him who is perfect in knowledge? |
You, whose garments are hot when the earth is still because of the south wind, | 17You whose clothes get hot when the land lies hushed under the south wind, |
will you, with him, spread out the clouds, solid as a mirror of molten metal? | 18can you, like Him, spread out the skies to reflect the heat like a mirror of bronze? |
Tell us what we should say to him. We cannot prepare a case because of the darkness. | 19Teach us what we should say to Him; we cannot draw up our case when our faces are in darkness. |
Should he be informed that I want to speak? If a man speaks, surely he would be swallowed up! | 20Should He be told that I want to speak? Would a man ask to be swallowed up? |
But now, the sun cannot be looked at--it is bright in the skies--after a wind passed and swept the clouds away. | 21Now no one can gaze at the sun when it is bright in the skies after the wind has swept them clean. |
From the north he comes in golden splendor; around God is awesome majesty. | 22Out of the north He comes in golden splendor; awesome majesty surrounds Him. |
As for the Almighty, we cannot attain to him! He is great in power, but justice and abundant righteousness he does not oppress. | 23The Almighty is beyond our reach; He is exalted in power! In His justice and great righteousness He does not oppress. |
Therefore people fear him, for he does not regard all the wise in heart." | 24Therefore, men fear Him, for He is not partial to the wise in heart.” |
