| 1Listen, Israel: Today you are about to cross the Jordan so you can dispossess the nations there, people greater and stronger than you who live in large cities with extremely high fortifications. | 1"Listen, Israel! Today you are about to cross the Jordan to enter and dispossess greater and mightier nations than you, who live in large cities that are fortified to the sky. |
| 2They include the Anakites, a numerous and tall people whom you know about and of whom it is said, "Who is able to resist the Anakites?" | 2The Anakim are strong and tall, and you know them. You've heard it said, 'Who can stand up against the Anakim?' |
| 3Understand today that the LORD your God who goes before you is a devouring fire; he will defeat and subdue them before you. You will dispossess and destroy them quickly just as he has told you. | 3But know today that the LORD your God is going ahead of you as a consuming fire. He will destroy and subdue them before you. He will dispossess and destroy them quickly, just as the LORD told you. |
| 4Do not think to yourself after the LORD your God has driven them out before you, "Because of my own righteousness the LORD has brought me here to possess this land." It is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out ahead of you. | 4After the LORD has expelled them before you, you are not to say to yourselves, 'The LORD caused me to enter and possess this land because of my righteousness.' |
| 5It is not because of your righteousness, or even your inner uprightness, that you have come here to possess their land. Instead, because of the wickedness of these nations the LORD your God is driving them out ahead of you in order to confirm the promise he made on oath to your ancestors, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. | 5On the contrary, it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is dispossessing them before you to confirm what the LORD promised by an oath to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. |
| 6Understand, therefore, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is about to give you this good land as a possession, for you are a stubborn people! | 6Know that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving to you this good land to inherit, for you are a stubborn people." |
| 7Remember--don't ever forget--how you provoked the LORD your God in the desert; from the time you left the land of Egypt until you came to this place you were constantly rebelling against him. | 7"Remember—and don't ever forget—how you provoked the LORD your God in the desert. From the day that you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place you have been rebelling against the LORD. |
| 8At Horeb you provoked him and he was angry enough with you to destroy you. | 8At Horeb you continually rebelled against the LORD, so that he was angry enough to destroy you. |
| 9When I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD made with you, I remained there forty days and nights, eating and drinking nothing. | 9Then I went up to the mountain to receive the two stone Tablets of the Covenant that the LORD had established with you. I stayed on the mountain for 40 days and nights without eating food or drinking water. |
| 10The LORD gave me the two stone tablets, written by the very finger of God, and on them was everything he said to you at the mountain from the midst of the fire at the time of that assembly. | 10Then the LORD gave me the two stone tablets on which God inscribed with his own finger all the words that the LORD spoke to you on the mountain from the middle of the fire that day when you were all assembled together. |
| 11Now at the end of the forty days and nights the LORD presented me with the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. | 11At the end of 40 days and nights, the LORD gave to me the two stone Tablets of the Covenant. |
| 12And he said to me, "Get up, go down at once from here because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have sinned! They have quickly turned from the way I commanded them and have made for themselves a cast metal image." | 12"Then the LORD told me, 'Get going! Go down from here at once! Your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned quickly from the way that I commanded them, and have cast an idol for their use.' |
| 13Moreover, he said to me, "I have taken note of these people; they are a stubborn lot! | 13"Then the LORD told me, 'I have examined this people, and they are stubborn indeed. |
| 14Stand aside and I will destroy them, obliterating their very name from memory, and I will make you into a stronger and more numerous nation than they are." | 14Let me alone! I will destroy them and blot out their name under heaven. Then I'll make you into a nation that will be mighty and more numerous than they are.' |
| 15So I turned and went down the mountain while it was blazing with fire; the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands. | 15"So I turned and went down from the mountain while the mountain was on fire. The two Tablets of the Covenant were in both of my hands. |
| 16When I looked, you had indeed sinned against the LORD your God and had cast for yourselves a metal calf; you had quickly turned aside from the way he had commanded you! | 16Then I saw how you had really sinned against the LORD your God! You had made for yourselves a calf, a cast idol. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the LORD your God had commanded. |
| 17I grabbed the two tablets, threw them down, and shattered them before your very eyes. | 17So I grabbed the two tablets and then threw them out of my hands, breaking them before your eyes. |
| 18Then I again fell down before the LORD for forty days and nights; I ate and drank nothing because of all the sin you had committed, doing such evil before the LORD as to enrage him. | 18I fell down in the LORD's presence, just as I had the first 40 days and nights. I did not eat food or drink water because of your sin. You had sinned by committing this evil in the sight of the LORD, thereby provoking him to anger. |
| 19For I was terrified at the LORD's intense anger that threatened to destroy you. But he listened to me this time as well. | 19I feared the anger and wrath of the LORD against you, because he was irate enough to destroy you. But the LORD also listened to me at that time. |
| 20The LORD was also angry enough at Aaron to kill him, but at that time I prayed for him too. | 20It was as had been the case with Aaron, the LORD was very angry and about to destroy him, but I prayed for Aaron at that time. |
| 21As for your sinful thing that you had made, the calf, I took it, melted it down, ground it up until it was as fine as dust, and tossed the dust into the stream that flows down the mountain. | 21Now, when you made the calf that made you sin, I grabbed it, burned it with fire, crushed it, and ground it thoroughly until it was pulverized to powder. Then I threw the powder into the river that was flowing from the mountain." |
| 22Moreover, you continued to provoke the LORD at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth-Hattaavah. | 22"You provoked the LORD again at Taberah, Massah, and Kibroth-hattaavah. |
| 23And when he sent you from Kadesh-Barnea and told you, "Go up and possess the land I have given you," you rebelled against the LORD your God and would neither believe nor obey him. | 23When the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea and told you, 'Go possess the land that I gave you,' instead you disobeyed what the LORD your God said. You didn't trust him or listen to his voice. |
| 24You have been rebelling against him from the very first day I knew you! | 24You have been rebelling against the LORD since the day I knew you. |
| 25I lay flat on the ground before the LORD for forty days and nights, for he had said he would destroy you. | 25I fell down in the LORD's presence for 40 days and nights, because the LORD said he was ready to destroy you. |
| 26I prayed to him: O, Lord GOD, do not destroy your people, your valued property that you have powerfully redeemed, whom you brought out of Egypt by your strength. | 26So I prayed to the LORD and said, 'Oh LORD my God, don't destroy your people and your inheritance whom you redeemed by your power. You brought them out from Egypt in a powerful way. |
| 27Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; ignore the stubbornness, wickedness, and sin of these people. | 27Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Don't pay attention to the stubbornness, wickedness, and sinfulness of this people. |
| 28Otherwise the people of the land from which you brought us will say, "The LORD was unable to bring them to the land he promised them, and because of his hatred for them he has brought them out to kill them in the desert." | 28Otherwise, the people of the land from which you brought us will say, "The LORD wasn't able to bring them out of the land that he had promised them. So he brought them out to kill them in the desert because he hated them." |
| 29They are your people, your valued property, whom you brought out with great strength and power. | 29But they are your people and inheritance, whom you brought out by your mighty strength and awesome power.'" |
