David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul. | 1David spoke the words of this song to the LORD on the day the LORD rescued him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. |
He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. | 2He said: The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, |
My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence! | 3my God, my mountain where I seek refuge. My shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, You save me from violence. |
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. | 4I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was saved from my enemies. |
The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. | 5For the waves of death engulfed me; the torrents of destruction terrified me. |
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me. | 6The ropes of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. |
In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. | 7I called to the LORD in my distress; I called to my God. From His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for help reached His ears. |
The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry. | 8Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled; they shook because He burned with anger. |
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. | 9Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire came from His mouth; coals were set ablaze by it. |
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. | 10He parted the heavens and came down, a dark cloud beneath His feet. |
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. | 11He rode on a cherub and flew, soaring on the wings of the wind. |
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. | 12He made darkness a canopy around Him, a gathering of water and thick clouds. |
From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire. | 13From the radiance of His presence, flaming coals were ignited. |
The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly. | 14The LORD thundered from heaven; the Most High projected His voice. |
He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them. | 15He shot arrows and scattered them; He hurled lightning bolts and routed them. |
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. | 16The depths of the sea became visible, the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils. |
He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. | 17He reached down from heaven and took hold of me; He pulled me out of deep waters. |
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. | 18He rescued me from my powerful enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. |
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. | 19They confronted me in the day of my distress, but the LORD was my support. |
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. | 20He brought me out to a spacious place; He rescued me because He delighted in me. |
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. | 21The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; He repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands. |
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. | 22For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not turned from my God to wickedness. |
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. | 23Indeed, I have kept all His ordinances in mind and have not disregarded His statutes. |
I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning. | 24I was blameless before Him and kept myself from sinning. |
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. | 25So the LORD repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in His sight. |
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. | 26With the faithful You prove Yourself faithful; with the blameless man You prove Yourself blameless; |
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. | 27with the pure You prove Yourself pure, but with the crooked You prove Yourself shrewd. |
You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. | 28You rescue an afflicted people, but Your eyes are set against the proud-- You humble them. |
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me. | 29 LORD, You are my lamp; the LORD illuminates my darkness. |
Indeed, with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. | 30With You I can attack a barrier, and with my God I can leap over a wall. |
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. | 31God--His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is pure. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. |
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? | 32For who is God besides the LORD? And who is a rock? Only our God. |
The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way. | 33God is my strong refuge; He makes my way perfect. |
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. | 34He makes my feet like the feet of a deer and sets me securely on the heights. |
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. | 35He trains my hands for war; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. |
You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. | 36You have given me the shield of Your salvation; Your help exalts me. |
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. | 37You widen a place beneath me for my steps, and my ankles do not give way. |
I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. | 38I pursue my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until they are wiped out. |
I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet. | 39I wipe them out and crush them, and they do not rise; they fall beneath my feet. |
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. | 40You have clothed me with strength for battle; You subdue my adversaries beneath me. |
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. | 41You have made my enemies retreat before me; I annihilate those who hate me. |
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. | 42They look, but there is no one to save them-- they look to the LORD, but He does not answer them. |
I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets. | 43I pulverize them like dust of the earth; I crush them and trample them like mud in the streets. |
You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. | 44You have freed me from the feuds among my people; You have appointed me the head of nations; a people I had not known serve me. |
Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. | 45Foreigners submit to me grudgingly; as soon as they hear, they obey me. |
Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. | 46Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their fortifications. |
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! | 47The LORD lives--may my rock be praised! God, the rock of my salvation, is exalted. |
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. | 48God--He gives me vengeance and casts down peoples under me. |
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. | 49He frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my adversaries; You rescue me from violent men. |
So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you. | 50Therefore I will praise You, LORD, among the nations; I will sing about Your name. |
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!" | 51He is a tower of salvation for His king; He shows loyalty to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever. |
