David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD rescued him from the power of all his enemies, including Saul.1And David spoke to the LORD the words of this song on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.
He said: "The LORD is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. 2He said, “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, my stronghold, my refuge, my savior. You save me from violence! 3my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.
I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I was delivered from my enemies. 4I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.
The waves of death engulfed me; the currents of chaos overwhelmed me. 5“For the waves of death encompassed me, the torrents of destruction assailed me;
The ropes of Sheol tightened around me; the snares of death trapped me. 6the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called to the LORD; I called to my God. From his heavenly temple he heard my voice; he listened to my cry for help. 7“In my distress I called upon the LORD; to my God I called. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry came to his ears.
The earth heaved and shook; the foundations of the sky trembled. They heaved because he was angry. 8“Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations of the heavens trembled and quaked, because he was angry.
Smoke ascended from his nose; fire devoured as it came from his mouth; he hurled down fiery coals. 9Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him.
He made the sky sink as he descended; a thick cloud was under his feet. 10He bowed the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet.
He mounted a winged angel and flew; he glided on the wings of the wind. 11He rode on a cherub and flew; he was seen on the wings of the wind.
He shrouded himself in darkness, in thick rain clouds. 12He made darkness around him his canopy, thick clouds, a gathering of water.
From the brightness in front of him came coals of fire. 13Out of the brightness before him coals of fire flamed forth.
The LORD thundered from the sky; the sovereign One shouted loudly. 14The LORD thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice.
He shot arrows and scattered them, lightning and routed them. 15And he sent out arrows and scattered them; lightning, and routed them.
The depths of the sea were exposed; the inner regions of the world were uncovered by the LORD's battle cry, by the powerful breath from his nose. 16Then the channels of the sea were seen; the foundations of the world were laid bare, at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
He reached down from above and grabbed me; he pulled me from the surging water. 17“He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters.
He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hate me, for they were too strong for me. 18He rescued me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.
They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD helped me. 19They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support.
He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me. 20He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.
The LORD repaid me for my godly deeds; he rewarded my blameless behavior. 21“The LORD dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me.
For I have obeyed the LORD's commands; I have not rebelled against my God. 22For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For I am aware of all his regulations, and I do not reject his rules. 23For all his rules were before me, and from his statutes I did not turn aside.
I was blameless before him; I kept myself from sinning. 24I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from guilt.
The LORD rewarded me for my godly deeds; he took notice of my blameless behavior. 25And the LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight.
You prove to be loyal to one who is faithful; you prove to be trustworthy to one who is innocent. 26“With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
You prove to be reliable to one who is blameless, but you prove to be deceptive to one who is perverse. 27with the purified you deal purely, and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
You deliver oppressed people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. 28You save a humble people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down.
Indeed, you are my lamp, LORD. The LORD illumines the darkness around me. 29For you are my lamp, O LORD, and my God lightens my darkness.
Indeed,with your help I can charge against an army; by my God's power I can jump over a wall. 30For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall.
The one true God acts in a faithful manner; the LORD's promise is reliable; he is a shield to all who take shelter in him. 31This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
Indeed, who is God besides the LORD? Who is a protector besides our God? 32“For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?
The one true God is my mighty refuge; he removes the obstacles in my way. 33This God is my strong refuge and has made my way blameless.
He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. 34He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights.
He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend even the strongest bow. 35He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
You give me your protective shield; your willingness to help enables me to prevail. 36You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your gentleness made me great.
You widen my path; my feet do not slip. 37You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip;
I chase my enemies and destroy them; I do not turn back until I wipe them out. 38I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, and did not turn back until they were consumed.
I wipe them out and beat them to death; they cannot get up; they fall at my feet. 39I consumed them; I thrust them through, so that they did not rise; they fell under my feet.
You give me strength for battle; you make my foes kneel before me. 40For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me.
You make my enemies retreat; I destroy those who hate me. 41You made my enemies turn their backs to me, those who hated me, and I destroyed them.
They cry out, but there is no one to help them; they cry out to the LORD, but he does not answer them. 42They looked, but there was none to save; they cried to the LORD, but he did not answer them.
I grind them as fine as the dust of the ground; I crush them and stomp on them like clay in the streets. 43I beat them fine as the dust of the earth; I crushed them and stamped them down like the mire of the streets.
You rescue me from a hostile army; you preserve me as a leader of nations; people over whom I had no authority are now my subjects. 44“You delivered me from strife with my people; you kept me as the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me.
Foreigners are powerless before me; when they hear of my exploits, they submit to me. 45Foreigners came cringing to me; as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me.
Foreigners lose their courage; they shake with fear as they leave their strongholds. 46Foreigners lost heart and came trembling out of their fortresses.
The LORD is alive! My protector is praiseworthy! The God who delivers me is exalted as king! 47“The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation,
The one true God completely vindicates me; he makes nations submit to me. 48the God who gave me vengeance and brought down peoples under me,
He delivers me from my enemies; you snatch me away from those who attack me; you rescue me from violent men. 49who brought me out from my enemies; you exalted me above those who rose against me; you delivered me from men of violence.
So I will give you thanks, O LORD, before the nations! I will sing praises to you. 50“For this I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations, and sing praises to your name.
He gives his chosen king magnificent victories; he is faithful to his chosen ruler, to David and to his descendants forever!" 51Great salvation he brings to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David and his offspring forever.”
