For the music director; by David, a psalm, a song. God springs into action! His enemies scatter; his adversaries run from him. 1For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. A song. God arises. His enemies are scattered, and those who hate Him flee His presence.
As smoke is driven away by the wind, so you drive them away. As wax melts before fire, so the wicked are destroyed before God. 2As smoke is blown away, You will drive them out; as wax melts before the fire, the wicked will perish in the presence of God.
But the godly are happy; they rejoice before God and are overcome with joy. 3But the righteous will be glad and rejoice before God; they will celebrate with joy.
Sing to God! Sing praises to his name! Exalt the one who rides on the clouds! For the LORD is his name! Rejoice before him! 4Sing to God! Sing praises to His name. Exalt Him who rides on the clouds—His name is the LORD—and rejoice before Him.
He is a father to the fatherless and an advocate for widows. God rules from his holy palace. 5A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in His holy habitation.
God settles those who have been deserted in their own homes; he frees prisoners and grants them prosperity. But sinful rebels live in the desert. 6God settles the lonely in families; He leads the prisoners out to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.
O God, when you lead your people into battle, when you march through the desert, (Selah) 7O God, when You went out before Your people, when You marched through the wasteland, Selah
the earth shakes, yes, the heavens pour down rain before God, the God of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel. 8the earth shook and the heavens poured down rain before God, the One on Sinai, before God, the God of Israel.
O God, you cause abundant showers to fall on your chosen people. When they are tired, you sustain them, 9You sent abundant rain, O God; You refreshed Your weary inheritance.
for you live among them. You sustain the oppressed with your good blessings, O God. 10Your flock settled therein; O God, from Your bounty You provided for the poor.
The Lord speaks; many, many women spread the good news. 11The Lord gives the command; a great company of women proclaim it:
Kings leading armies run away--they run away! The lovely lady of the house divides up the loot. 12“Kings and their armies flee in haste; she who waits at home divides the plunder.
When you lie down among the sheepfolds, the wings of the dove are covered with silver and with glittering gold. 13Though you lie down among the sheepfolds, the wings of the dove are covered with silver, and her feathers with shimmering gold.”
When the sovereign judge scatters kings, let it snow on Zalmon! 14When the Almighty scattered the kings in the land, it was like the snow falling on Zalmon.
The mountain of Bashan is a towering mountain; the mountain of Bashan is a mountain with many peaks. 15A mountain of God is Mount Bashan; a mountain of many peaks is Mount Bashan.
Why do you look with envy, O mountains with many peaks, at the mountain where God has decided to live? Indeed the LORD will live there permanently! 16Why do you gaze in envy, O mountains of many peaks? This is the mountain God chose for His dwelling, where the LORD will surely dwell forever.
God has countless chariots; they number in the thousands. The Lord comes from Sinai in holy splendor. 17The chariots of God are tens of thousands—thousands of thousands are they; the Lord is in His sanctuary as He was at Sinai.
You ascend on high, you have taken many captives. You receive tribute from men, including even sinful rebels. Indeed the LORD God lives there! 18You have ascended on high; You have led captives away. You have received gifts from men, even from the rebellious, that the LORD God may dwell there.
The Lord deserves praise! Day after day he carries our burden, the God who delivers us. (Selah) 19Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden, the God of our salvation. Selah
Our God is a God who delivers; the LORD, the sovereign Lord, can rescue from death. 20Our God is a God of deliverance; the Lord GOD is our rescuer from death.
Indeed God strikes the heads of his enemies, the hairy foreheads of those who persist in rebellion. 21Surely God will crush the heads of His enemies, the hairy crowns of those who persist in guilty ways.
The Lord says, "I will retrieve them from Bashan, I will bring them back from the depths of the sea, 22The Lord said, “I will retrieve them from Bashan, I will bring them up from the depths of the sea,
so that your feet may stomp in their blood, and your dogs may eat their portion of the enemies' corpses." 23that your foot may be dipped in the blood of your foes—the tongues of your dogs in the same.”
They see your processions, O God--the processions of my God, my king, who marches along in holy splendor. 24They have seen Your procession, O God—the march of my God and King into the sanctuary.
Singers walk in front; musicians follow playing their stringed instruments, in the midst of young women playing tambourines. 25The singers lead the way, the musicians follow after, among the maidens playing tambourines.
In your large assemblies praise God, the LORD, in the assemblies of Israel! 26Bless God in the great congregation; bless the LORD from the fountain of Israel.
There is little Benjamin, their ruler, and the princes of Judah in their robes, along with the princes of Zebulun and the princes of Naphtali. 27There is Benjamin, the youngest, ruling them, the princes of Judah in their company, the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali.
God has decreed that you will be powerful. O God, you who have acted on our behalf, demonstrate your power, 28Summon Your power, O God; show Your strength, O God, which You have exerted on our behalf.
as you come out of your temple in Jerusalem! Kings bring tribute to you. 29Because of Your temple at Jerusalem kings will bring You gifts.
Sound your battle cry against the wild beast of the reeds, and the nations that assemble like a herd of calves led by bulls! They humble themselves and offer gold and silver as tribute. God scatters the nations that like to do battle. 30Rebuke the beast in the reeds, the herd of bulls among the calves of the nations, until it submits, bringing bars of silver. Scatter the nations who delight in war.
They come with red cloth from Egypt, Ethiopia voluntarily offers tribute to God. 31Envoys will arrive from Egypt; Cush will stretch out her hands to God.
O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God! Sing praises to the Lord, (Selah) 32Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth; sing praises to the Lord—Selah
to the one who rides through the sky from ancient times! Look! He thunders loudly. 33to Him who rides upon the highest heavens of old; behold, His mighty voice resounds.
Acknowledge God's power, his sovereignty over Israel, and the power he reveals in the skies! 34Ascribe the power to God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose strength is in the skies.
You are awe-inspiring, O God, as you emerge from your holy temple! It is the God of Israel who gives the people power and strength. God deserves praise! 35O God, You are awesome in Your sanctuary; the God of Israel Himself gives strength and power to His people. Blessed be God!
