Now the man had marital relations with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. Then she said, "I have created a man just as the LORD did!" | 1And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man,” she said. |
Then she gave birth to his brother Abel. Abel took care of the flocks, while Cain cultivated the ground. | 2Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil. |
At the designated time Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground for an offering to the LORD. | 3So in the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruit of the soil as an offering to the LORD, |
But Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock--even the fattest of them. And the LORD was pleased with Abel and his offering, | 4while Abel brought the best portions of the firstborn of his flock. And the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, |
but with Cain and his offering he was not pleased. So Cain became very angry, and his expression was downcast. | 5but He had no regard for Cain and his offering. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell. |
Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why is your expression downcast? | 6“Why are you angry,” said the LORD to Cain, “and why has your countenance fallen? |
Is it not true that if you do what is right, you will be fine? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. It desires to dominate you, but you must subdue it." | 7If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.” |
Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. | 8Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. |
Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" And he replied, "I don't know! Am I my brother's guardian?" | 9And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” |
But the LORD said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground! | 10“What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. |
So now, you are banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. | 11Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. |
When you try to cultivate the ground it will no longer yield its best for you. You will be a homeless wanderer on the earth." | 12When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” |
Then Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is too great to endure! | 13But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. |
Look! You are driving me off the land today, and I must hide from your presence. I will be a homeless wanderer on the earth; whoever finds me will kill me." | 14Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” |
But the LORD said to him, "All right then, if anyone kills Cain, Cain will be avenged seven times as much." Then the LORD put a special mark on Cain so that no one who found him would strike him down. | 15“Not so!” replied the LORD. “If anyone slays Cain, then Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” And the LORD placed a mark on Cain, so that no one who found him would kill him. |
So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. | 16So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. |

Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah! Listen to me! You wives of Lamech, hear my words! I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for hurting me. | 23Then Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, listen to my speech. For I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. |
If Cain is to be avenged seven times as much, then Lamech seventy-seven times!" | 24If Cain is avenged sevenfold, then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.” |
