Brethren, my heart's desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation.1Brothers and sisters, my heart's desire and prayer to God concerning them is for their salvation.
For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge.2I can testify about them that they have zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
For not knowing about God's righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.3Since they are ignorant of the righteousness of God and attempted to establish their own righteousness, they have not submitted to God's righteousness.
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.4For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes,
For Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on law shall live by that righteousness.5since Moses writes about the righteousness that is from the law: The one who does these things will live by them.
But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: "DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, 'WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN?' (that is, to bring Christ down),6But the righteousness that comes from faith speaks like this: Do not say in your heart, "Who will go up to heaven?" that is, to bring Christ down
or 'WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)."7or, "Who will go down into the abyss?" that is, to bring Christ up from the dead.
But what does it say? "THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART "-- that is, the word of faith which we are preaching,8On the contrary, what does it say? The message is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. This is the message of faith that we proclaim:
that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;9If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.10One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation.
For the Scripture says, "WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."11For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes on him will not be put to shame,
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him;12since there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord of all richly blesses all who call on him.
for "WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED."13For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?14How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher?
How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!"15And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.
However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, "LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?"16But not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our message?
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.17So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.
But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have; "THEIR VOICE HAS GONE OUT INTO ALL THE EARTH, AND THEIR WORDS TO THE ENDS OF THE WORLD."18But I ask, "Did they not hear?" Yes, they did: Their voice has gone out to the whole earth, and their words to the ends of the world.
But I say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First Moses says, "I WILL MAKE YOU JEALOUS BY THAT WHICH IS NOT A NATION, BY A NATION WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING WILL I ANGER YOU."19But I ask, "Did Israel not understand?" First, Moses said, I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that lacks understanding.
And Isaiah is very bold and says, "I WAS FOUND BY THOSE WHO DID NOT SEEK ME, I BECAME MANIFEST TO THOSE WHO DID NOT ASK FOR ME."20And Isaiah says boldly, I was found by those who were not looking for me; I revealed myself to those who were not asking for me.
But as for Israel He says, "ALL THE DAY LONG I HAVE STRETCHED OUT MY HANDS TO A DISOBEDIENT AND OBSTINATE PEOPLE."21But to Israel he says, All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and defiant people.
