The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.1This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY;2As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way.”
THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.'"3“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.’ ”
John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.4John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.5People went out to him from all of Jerusalem and the countryside of Judea. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey.6John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
And he was preaching, and saying, "After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals.7And he began to proclaim: “After me will come One more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
"I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."8I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;10As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, He saw the heavens breaking open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove.
and a voice came out of the heavens: "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased."11And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
Immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness.12At once the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness,
And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to Him.13and He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him.
Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,14After the arrest of John, Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel of God.
and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."15“The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!”
As He was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen.16As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
And Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."17“Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.18And at once they left their nets and followed Him.
Going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets.19Going on a little farther, He saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat, mending their nets.
Immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went away to follow Him.20Immediately Jesus called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.
They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach.21Then Jesus and His companions went to Capernaum, and right away Jesus entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach.
They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.22The people were astonished at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,23Suddenly a man with an unclean spirit cried out in the synagogue:
saying, "What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are-- the Holy One of God!"24“What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"25But Jesus rebuked the spirit. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!”
Throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him.26At this, the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and came out with a loud shriek.
They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."27All the people were amazed and began to ask one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him!”
Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.28And the news about Jesus spread quickly through the whole region of Galilee.
And immediately after they came out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.29As soon as Jesus and His companions had left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and immediately they spoke to Jesus about her.30Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever, and they promptly told Jesus about her.
And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she waited on them.31So He went to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began to serve them.
When evening came, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were demon-possessed.32That evening, after sunset, people brought to Jesus all who were sick and demon-possessed,
And the whole city had gathered at the door.33and the whole town gathered at the door.
And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.34And He healed many who were ill with various diseases and drove out many demons. But He would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.
In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there.35Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and slipped out to a solitary place to pray.
Simon and his companions searched for Him;36Simon and his companions went to look for Him,
they found Him, and said to Him, "Everyone is looking for You."37and when they found Him, they said, “Everyone is looking for You!”
He said to them, "Let us go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may preach there also; for that is what I came for."38But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns so I can preach there as well, for that is why I have come.”
And He went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out the demons.39So He went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
And a leper came to Jesus, beseeching Him and falling on his knees before Him, and saying, "If You are willing, You can make me clean."40Then a leper came to Jesus, begging on his knees: “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”
Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, "I am willing; be cleansed."41Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!”
Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.42And immediately the leprosy left him, and the man was cleansed.
And He sternly warned him and immediately sent him away,43Jesus promptly sent him away with a stern warning:
and He said to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."44“See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
But he went out and began to proclaim it freely and to spread the news around, to such an extent that Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city, but stayed out in unpopulated areas; and they were coming to Him from everywhere.45But the man went out and openly began to proclaim and spread the news. Consequently, Jesus could no longer enter a town in plain view, but He stayed out in solitary places. Yet people came to Him from every quarter.
