Job 36
KJV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
King James BibleNew Living Translation
Elihu also proceeded, and said,1Elihu continued speaking:
Suffer me a little, and I will shew thee that I have yet to speak on God's behalf.2“Let me go on, and I will show you the truth. For I have not finished defending God!
I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.3I will present profound arguments for the righteousness of my Creator.
For truly my words shall not be false: he that is perfect in knowledge is with thee.4I am telling you nothing but the truth, for I am a man of great knowledge.
Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom.5“God is mighty, but he does not despise anyone! He is mighty in both power and understanding.
He preserveth not the life of the wicked: but giveth right to the poor.6He does not let the wicked live but gives justice to the afflicted.
He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings are they on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted.7He never takes his eyes off the innocent, but he sets them on thrones with kings and exalts them forever.
And if they be bound in fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction;8If they are bound in chains and caught up in a web of trouble,
Then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded.9he shows them the reason. He shows them their sins of pride.
He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity.10He gets their attention and commands that they turn from evil.
If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.11“If they listen and obey God, they will be blessed with prosperity throughout their lives. All their years will be pleasant.
But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.12But if they refuse to listen to him, they will cross over the river of death, dying from lack of understanding.
But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not when he bindeth them.13For the godless are full of resentment. Even when he punishes them, they refuse to cry out to him for help.
They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean.14They die when they are young, after wasting their lives in immoral living.
He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression.15But by means of their suffering, he rescues those who suffer. For he gets their attention through adversity.
Even so would he have removed thee out of the strait into a broad place, where there is no straitness; and that which should be set on thy table should be full of fatness.16“God is leading you away from danger, Job, to a place free from distress. He is setting your table with the best food.
But thou hast fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on thee.17But you are obsessed with whether the godless will be judged. Don’t worry, judgment and justice will be upheld.
Because there is wrath, beware lest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee.18But watch out, or you may be seduced by wealth. Don’t let yourself be bribed into sin.
Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength.19Could all your wealth or all your mighty efforts keep you from distress?
Desire not the night, when people are cut off in their place.20Do not long for the cover of night, for that is when people will be destroyed.
Take heed, regard not iniquity: for this hast thou chosen rather than affliction.21Be on guard! Turn back from evil, for God sent this suffering to keep you from a life of evil. Elihu Reminds Job of God’s Power
Behold, God exalteth by his power: who teacheth like him?22“Look, God is all-powerful. Who is a teacher like him?
Who hath enjoined him his way? or who can say, Thou hast wrought iniquity?23No one can tell him what to do, or say to him, ‘You have done wrong.’
Remember that thou magnify his work, which men behold.24Instead, glorify his mighty works, singing songs of praise.
Every man may see it; man may behold it afar off.25Everyone has seen these things, though only from a distance.
Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.26“Look, God is greater than we can understand. His years cannot be counted.
For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof:27He draws up the water vapor and then distills it into rain.
Which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly.28The rain pours down from the clouds, and everyone benefits.
Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?29Who can understand the spreading of the clouds and the thunder that rolls forth from heaven?
Behold, he spreadeth his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea.30See how he spreads the lightning around him and how it lights up the depths of the sea.
For by them judgeth he the people; he giveth meat in abundance.31By these mighty acts he nourishes the people, giving them food in abundance.
With clouds he covereth the light; and commandeth it not to shine by the cloud that cometh betwixt.32He fills his hands with lightning bolts and hurls each at its target.
The noise thereof sheweth concerning it, the cattle also concerning the vapour.33The thunder announces his presence; the storm announces his indignant anger.
