Peter 4
KJV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
King James BibleNew Living Translation
Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;1So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin.
That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.2You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God.
For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:3You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols.
Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:4Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you.
Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.5But remember that they will have to face God, who stands ready to judge everyone, both the living and the dead.
For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.6That is why the Good News was preached to those who are now dead —so although they were destined to die like all people, they now live forever with God in the Spirit.
But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.7The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers.
And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.8Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins.
Use hospitality one to another without grudging.9Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay.
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.10God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.
If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.11Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen. Suffering for Being a Christian
Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:12Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you.
But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.13Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.
If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.14If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you.
But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.15If you suffer, however, it must not be for murder, stealing, making trouble, or prying into other people’s affairs.
Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.16But it is no shame to suffer for being a Christian. Praise God for the privilege of being called by his name!
For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?17For the time has come for judgment, and it must begin with God’s household. And if judgment begins with us, what terrible fate awaits those who have never obeyed God’s Good News?
And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?18And also, “If the righteous are barely saved, what will happen to godless sinners?”
Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.19So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.
