King James Bible | NET Bible |
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? | 1What shall we say then? Are we to remain in sin so that grace may increase? |
God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? | 2Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? |
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? | 3Or do you not know that as many as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? |
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. | 4Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life. |
For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: | 5For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be united in the likeness of his resurrection. |
Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. | 6We know that our old man was crucified with him so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. |
For he that is dead is freed from sin. | 7(For someone who has died has been freed from sin.) |
Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: | 8Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. |
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. | 9We know that since Christ has been raised from the dead, he is never going to die again; death no longer has mastery over him. |
For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. | 10For the death he died, he died to sin once for all, but the life he lives, he lives to God. |
Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 11So you too consider yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. |
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. | 12Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires, |
Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. | 13and do not present your members to sin as instruments to be used for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead and your members to God as instruments to be used for righteousness. |
For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. | 14For sin will have no mastery over you, because you are not under law but under grace. |
What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. | 15What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Absolutely not! |
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? | 16Do you not know that if you present yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or obedience resulting in righteousness? |
But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. | 17But thanks be to God that though you were slaves to sin, you obeyed from the heart that pattern of teaching you were entrusted to, |
Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. | 18and having been freed from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. |
I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. | 19(I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh.) For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. |
For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. | 20For when you were slaves of sin, you were free with regard to righteousness. |
What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. | 21So what benefit did you then reap from those things that you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death. |
But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. | 22But now, freed from sin and enslaved to God, you have your benefit leading to sanctification, and the end is eternal life. |
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. | 23For the payoff of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. |
